KKTV (Video Link) ^ | 10/6/05

This video news report is mostly what's been aired on past news reports: that Joel Hinrichs was turned away from the stadium, etc., but the the KEY quote from this story occurs about :30 seconds into the story, and that is when the reporter says "...a homemade REMOTE CONTROLLED bomb was strapped to his back

The story goes on to detail his attempted purchase of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, etc.

Maybe whoever remotely detonated the bomb couldn't see where Jihad Joey was. He had tried to get into the stadium three times, and been turned back. By their plans, he most likely should have been inside by the time they detonated it.

I've been out of town a good deal this week, but when home, I haven't heard any of the media reporting the remote control. Could be they were asked not to?

That's along the lines I was thinking of too.

I don't think he would carry a bomb knowing that somebody else had the button.

It was probably a telemarketer. He should have put the cell number on the Do Not Call list.

His car was in his apartment parking lot, and to my understanding, still might be today. (As of a couple days ago, it had not been impounded--not sure if it has been by now.)

"...have you hugged a Jihadi today?"

Well, shoot, no, I haven't, but maybe I can make up for it by inviting one to a good barbeque. We'll be having some country-style pork ribs.

;)

" Yup, I agree. I wonder if he even knew he had a bomb on him."

You're kidding, right? They find all those explosives in his apartment and in his car, but he never suspected he might be wearing some?

"This incident may be suicide."

Suicide with the intent to take others with you, at the very least.

Something that has been puzzling me about his car was that it was a Lincoln Town Car. Maybe that's common for college students in OK - I don't know - but it's certainly not what I normally think of as a kid's car. It does have a very large trunk, however, and is frequently used as a livery car. All of the Pakistani (and other) car service drivers in NYC had them.

One report had nails in the bomb.

While I'm being puzzled, I'll mention another thing that is puzzling. I read that he was last seen slumped over with his head or his upper body resting on his knapsack. The bus driver who gave his account of walking up behind him just before he detonated said that he thought Hinrichs was asleep. Obviously, he couldn't have committed suicide if he was asleep, unless he had something timed to go off without his control. I wonder if he had been drugged, or if perhaps, somehow, he died while sitting on the bench but before the bomb went off.

That is very interesting about the Pakis and Lincoln Town Cars.

I thought maybe the kid had inherited the old hulk from his father. It is definitely not a "cool" car to have on campus.

Have you seen this thread? First mention of a remote control device I've seen, and from CO Springs TV station.

I don't think Jihadi Joel planned to die. He tried to get into the stadium several times, (confirmed by this broadcast) and if there was a remote control device he meant to leave the backpack and detonate it separately.

Murdering little Muslim puke.

Interesting, about the livery use. From the pictures I saw, it appears to be an older model. I wonder if he bought it for the trunk size?

"Suicide with the intent to take others with you, at the very least."
That is the point of my post in its entirety. While there is an extremely remote possibility of suicide, remotely controlled detonation puts this event into the "it has never before happened in the US" category. The pizza guy was *not* ruled suicide.

When I heard those reports, my sense of it was--and this is just an opinion, not very educated at that--he was disappointed about not being able to get in. Drugged? I guess that might be possible too. I've heard some suicide bombers drug themselves either for false courage or to lessen the pain.

I suppose he could have inherited it - I don't recall reading anything about what year it was. Another interesting detail reported by the radio or TV reporter who looked into the car was that there was an atlas lying on the front seat, as if he had intended to go somewhere shortly or had just gotten back from some place that he wasn't familiar with. It would be interesting to know more about the car - where he had gotten it, how long he had had it, etc.

Yes, it could be that he was sitting there trying to come up with Plan B.

Some people described him as sitting on the bench at first removing things from his backpack and putting them in his jacket or vest. Then there were reports that he was sitting there with his head down, apparently so still that he seemed to be asleep.

However, if the bomb was detonated remotely (and the detonating cell phone was not on his person), that changes things. I think the Muslims often do drug their bomb carriers, btw.

"The bus driver who gave his account of walking up behind him just before he detonated said that he thought Hinrichs was asleep.'

I thought he might have been faking being asleep, to avoid attracting any attention from the driver. But that has to be speculation.
