I don't think Jihadi Joel planned to die. He tried to get into the stadium several times, (confirmed by this broadcast) and if there was a remote control device he meant to leave the backpack and detonate it separately.

There were other devices in the area including another backpack supposedly dropped by someone else when they cleared the scene before the kid blew up. Was he already dead when he blew up? Is that why his chin was on the backpack after putting explosives in his vest.
From some accounts he used to use a camera type vest.
