Senate nixes armor money
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | October 7, 2005 | By Robert Gehrke

WASHINGTON - Utah's senators voted against a proposal to provide $360 million in additional funds to up-armor trucks and Humvees in service in Iraq. The vote on the amendment came late Wednesday, a day after The Salt Lake Tribune reported many trucks used by soldiers attached to the Utah-based 146th Transportation Company still lack the type of armor that would help vehicles withstand roadside bombs. Others rely on "hillbilly armor," pieced together from salvaged scrap heaps. ....During debate on the floor Wednesday night, the amendment's sponsor, Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., said the additional $360 million "ensures that our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan will have the equipment they need to accomplish their mission while keeping them out of harm's way." He said the Defense Department has consistently underestimated the need for armored vehicles and are "no longer entitled to the benefit of the doubt. Regrettably, Walter Reed Army Hospital and other military hospitals are filled with the consequences of these errors." .... Thirteen Republicans, including Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John Warner of Virginia, voted for the increased funding, along with all but one of the Senate's Democrats. The amendment failed, 53-46, because of a rule requiring 60 votes on budget matters.

We can spend $200 billion to bail out the incompetents in New Orleans, but we can't spend $360 Million to protect the troops? This one really ticks me off!!!

Read the article. It was a Democratic political ploy so they could go back to their constituents and say, "see we pushed a bill pass the Republicans to help the troops". Well we already have funds (billions) for armor. The issue isn't funding, the issue is getting the armor to the right places. And for the most part this has happened.

Read the article

In case anyone missed it... this is a DemocRAT ploy.

Notice the article gets pretty far in before they provide the Republicans' argument against the bill.

Sleeper...

Your post is deceptive at best, dishonest at worst.

You removed the arguments made by the Republicans from your except in what appears to be, an attempt to create the appearance that Republicans had no good reason to oppose this bill.

If it was un-intentional, it sure looks bad for you. I am going to be watching for future posts of this nature and will flag them if they continue.

In reality, this armor should have been funded and procured back in the 90's to have it today. For some reason it wasn't a priority .

Sorry, not intentional, I assure you. This is the headline on the front page of the paper and as you mentioned the meat is in the last part of the article. I had a buddy that died because of the lack of armor in a Humvee in Iraq, maybe I'm a bit too sensitive to this issue. I had no idea this was a Democratic ploy.

It's always best to read the text of the amendments and the bills they are amending before flying off the handle.

...and all to deceive the american public into an emotional response against Republicans in general and GWB in particular, all of which seems to be on the first page of the playbook.

I can understand your concern about this issue. But the fact this was Evan Bayh (Dem with Presidential ambitions) was all I needed to know this was a ploy. Your excerpt was sufficient to understand this.

The Dems are notorious for these kinds of ploys. Kerry did this all the time during his senate tenure. But at crunch time he voted against the military like all libs do. It's who they are.

...Liberals and their media shills.
