A grandfather hiking a trail...with his 4-year-old grandson was attacked yesterday by a coyote, but saved the youngster by grappling with the animal as it continued to bite him.
Arthur Cole, 76, was attacked...by a 40-pound gray coyote, according to police. He was bitten several times but his injuries were not life-threatening.
His grandson, Nicholas, escaped unhurt and ran the half-mile to his grandparents' house...
When Arthur's wife and Nicholas' dad asked, "Where's Grampy?" the youngster replied, "A wolf got him," ...
Peter Cole, who was visiting his parents, jumped into his truck, drove to the development's community center and ran down the trail. "I was yelling for my father. He yelled to me, and he was lying on top of the coyote," ... "I tried to kill it, but there was nothing I could really do."
Peter called 911 on his cell phone and police and firefighters arrived.
"We got there and found the guy on top of the animal," firefighter Jamie Desautels said. "The guy basically saved his grandson."
Firefighters used a snare to restrain the female coyote, which continued to bite Cole...
Police then killed the coyote. "We basically choked the animal to death," Police Sgt. James Bruce said.
"The coyote attacked Arthur from behind," ...
"There was a struggle," Dave Cole said. "It went away and came back, and leaped for his neck."
...the cause of the attack is undetermined, but it was unprovoked. The female coyote may have been protecting her pups...
Bruce said residents in the housing development were being notified by the community center at the complex.
He cautioned residents to be aware and alert while walking near woods. Police don't know if there are other coyotes in the area...

Uhhhhh....I'd be getting a rabies shot. In nearly 50 years I've never seen a coyote attack a human, or even heard of it. My guess is that they were messing with it
Poor Nicholas, I hope this does not make him afraid of dogs in the future.
50 years ago it was almost unheard of to hear of coyotes getting anywhere near human habitations, but now some of them live off of poodles and housecats stolen out of back yards. It is just a small step from attacking a small dog to attacking a small human being.
But I would seriously consider the rabies shots, too.
Might make him a believer in the RKBA.
Agreed. The closest I've ever gotten to an uncaptured coyote is hearing them at night. I imagine I've been much closer, but they don't let you know.
Google "coyote attack" and read up a little.
??
Right to Keep and Bear Arms.
One thing is for sure, he's never going to sass Grandpa!
Why didn't he have a small pistol to defend----
OH! Boston area.
Nevermind.
That is because 50 years ago coyotes did not exist in much of the territory they now inhabit.
Gimme my coyote gun mama!
Sorry, but after 20 years as an Ozarker and 12 years in a Montana ghost town I'm pretty well informed on the subject.
Obviously you are not, if you have never heard of a coyote attack. Like I said, look it up.
Imagine it having been one of the Canadian wolves the lefties have been releasing into the south 48...
I've found coyotes in our yard in town. They don't fear us anymore.
My husband and I were taking a drive in the hill country and got out of the car once in a while to snap some pictures. We didn't see them; but, took a picture of 4 coyotes hidden in the bush just a few feet from my husband.
Rabid coyote attacks Cape mom

A Cape Cod man ran to his wife's rescue yesterday using a piece of lumber to cripple an attacking coyote that had locked its rabies-infected jaws on her wrist, police said.
The coyote was shot twice and killed by police, Sgt. Ben Baxter said.
Marstons Mills resident Cindy Parker-Kelley let the couple's Norwegian elkhound out yesterday around 7 a.m. A short time later, she heard the dog yelping in the back yard, police said.
When she looked outside, Baxter said she saw the family pet had cornered the rabid coyote.
When she ran out and tried to shoo away the critter, the coyote attacked her, police said.
David Kelley ran outside in his underwear, saw the animal latched onto his wife's arm, and grabbed a piece of lumber. He whacked the lunging animal several times, police said.
"I couldn't believe how brazen it was to keep coming at me," Kelley told WCVB-TV (Ch. 5).
