(New York - WABC, October 6, 2005) - A bus caught fire inside the Brooklyn Battery tunnel Thursday night about 250 feet north of the Brooklyn exit.

Civilians exited on foot out of the tunnel and according to officials there were multiple injuries, though none of them serious. Three patients were being treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

The tunnel is shut down Brooklyn-bound only at this time.

According to officials this is an accident and there is no suspicious activity involved.

Again, there is no indication that this is in any way related to the subway terror threat Mayor Bloomberg revealed earlier today.

We'll have more on this fire as we get more information and we'll have a complete wrap up on Eyewitness News at 11:00 p.m.

The bus fire was the second story on Newschannel 4 at 11, after the top stories about the subway terror threat. WNBC reported the fire was an accident - the express bus' engine caught fire. The passengers were put on another bus hours after the bus fire and sent home. WNBC showed video of the bus being towed out of the tunnel and interviewed some of the passengers.

I figured when there wasn't alot of coverage about it - that it was not too bad.

Nope. If it bleeds, it leads. Fortunately, injuries were minor (mainly smoke inhalation) and it was only an engine fire, not terrorism.

Is it unusual for the tunnel to still be closed if it was just an engine fire? This is almost 5 hours now.

Bus Catches Fire Inside Brooklyn Battery Tunnel

Oct 7, 2005 7:04 am US/Eastern

(1010 WINS) NEW YORK A fire on a city bus crossing the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel during yesterday's evening rush hour forced 20 passengers to evacuate. The incident occurred on a day when tensions were high due to a terror threat to the city's subway system.

Heavy smoke began pouring from the bus at around 7 p.m. when the bus was heading towards Brooklyn. Twenty passengers got off and walked to the Brooklyn side of the tunnel. Police say 13 of them were treated for smoke inhalation.

The Bomb Squad searched the bus, but found no suspicious packages. Police say the fire appeard to be mechanical.

The bus caught fire hours after city officials warned the public of a terror threat to the city's subway system.

Brookly-bound traffic was delayed for about an hour.

Traffic delayed for an hour? I watched the traffic cam on mta.nyc.ny.us/bandt/index.html until after 12:30am last night and the tunnel was still closed by the time I went to bed.

I guess that means traffice was rerouted?

Were they putting two-way traffic in the other tube? They do that during off-peak hours when there's construction.

The traffic in the other tube didn't look like it started up again until 11:30pm

It didn't not appear to be 2 way traffic.
