The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the operation resulted in two people being taken into custody. They said a third was being sought.
Information about the threat, the officials said, came to light last weekend from an intelligence source who told federal authorities that the three men in Iraq had planned to meet with other operatives in New York. One official said the group would number roughly a dozen. Another official said the total was closer to 20 people involved.
The men planned to use strollers, briefcases and packages to hide a number of bombs that they planned to detonate on the subways. "It was a conspiracy involving more than a dozen people aimed at delivering a number of devices into the subway," one of the officials said.
One official said the information suggested an attack could happen as early as today; another pointed to the middle of the month.
The department will also increase the use of radiation detectors, and detectives from the department's Intelligence Division will check parking lots and garages in Manhattan and in other areas of the city.

I would bet that the Oklahoma plotters are involved in the NYC plot and the Feds will continue to keep a lid on the story until they're ready to release it. I would expect they're still following, wiretapping, arresting Hinrichs' Pakistani collaborators.
It was WNBC-NY that held the information. Possibility is that the attacks would be in coordination for next week's vote on the Iraqi constitution.
I have no doubt that AQ would exploit a stupid kid to do their dirty work if the opportunity presented itself - the only catch would be making sure the stupid kid didn't talk to the police if he decided to bug out.

Update:
FBI Assistant Director Mark Mershon said the plot had already been partly thwarted. "Classified operations have in fact partially disrupted this threat," he said. "We continue to work around the clock to fully resolve this threat."
Asked about reports that the intelligence came from the arrest of three people in Iraq, Mershon said, "Our operations are classified, and we cannot discuss them."

Probably unrelated but the is an Islamic sect that believe "God put an authenticating code in all His scriptures, including the Qur'an, based on the number 19" - apparently they are called Submitters and believe in the Koran alone ( no extra texts )

There was plenty of warning before 9-11 but it was "lost in translation". I went back and re-read some of the internet news sites a few days before it and there was definately talk of something. Let's face it, before 9-11 we never thought we could be vulnerable and pretty much ignored the coming disaster.
What if something was found in Joe's apartment or computer in Oklahoma to suggest future plots?
