"My answer is: Don't trust me. Trust your own eyes. The woman is 61 years old, a lawyer for more than three decades. Can you see any instance in this long life and career where Miers ever took a risk on behalf of conservative principle? Can you see any indication of intellectual excellence? Did she ever do anything brave, anything that took backbone? Did anyone before this week ever describe her as oustanding in any way at all?"

He's nuts. Tons of people have described her excellence at fetching coffee for the other justices. And hard-working, don't forget hard-working. She's obviously at least as qualified as the receptionist where I work.

Nice insight...nicely stated by a master wordsmith.

We've certainly learned a lot about conservatives who are opposed to Miers...by the words they've chosen to employ in stating their opposition to her.

There is scarcely a single knowledgeable legal conservative in Washington who supports this nomination.

The whole thing is very interesting to me.

Here again Frum mentions "in Washington" no legal conservative supports her, whereas, I read and heard several reports where legal conservatives in Texas (where they know her) support her fully.

Could the "inside the beltway" thinking really be affecting their views?

When the "snobbery" issue first came up, I didn't give it much credence, but after Will's article yesterday, and here again this "in Washington" statement, it's beginning to make me wonder if elitism has taken hold of conservatives.

I trust President Bush's judgement of people much more than I do David Frum's. That much is certain.

The President can safely discard any advice from abortion-lover David Frum.

But ask them: "Well what if the president had consulted you on this choice," and the answer is almost always some version of: "I would have thought he was joking."

In fact, when Miers was leaked as a possibility, most of us thought it was a joke - beyond commenting on. We thought that when Gonzales was floated last summer and we spoke up loudly that it was cronyism, the message was received. This seemed IMPOSSIBLY STUPID. We were wrong. Sometimes the people we support really do jump the shark.

Come on Frum. Tell us how you wrote the "axis of evil speech" for our dum dum President. Then tell us how smart you are. See, you feel better already.

Only problem is we both like and respect the President and support his decisions on his past history of success. By the way, have you ever done anything except be a good student? I mean something real like practicing law, running an office or reading everything that goes to POTUS? I guess not. With your recent missive it is apparent you can get a regular gig at the NYT. Like Brooks.

Your only hazard is watch out for the Evangelicals! They are a bunch of cronies--you know, like the President and Meirs.

"'There's a stalemate there,' says one person familiar with the chief of staff's office. 'The process can't move forward because you have to get every conceivable piece of background before you can move onto the next level. People are talking about a focus on process that is so intense it gets in the way of substance.'
"One former White House official familiar with both the counsel's office and Miers is more blunt.

In citing this article that appeared in the " Legal Times", Frum does not give any information about the identity of either source. "One person familiar with the chief of staff's office"; WHOSE chief of staff's office? Is this person from the Clinton administration? It would give some context to their comments, don't you think? Ditto with the "former White House official familiar with both the counsel's office and with Miers." Could be anyone. May not even be someone in the Bush Administration, though the article would have the readers believe that it is.

I'm sure Frum is hearing a LOT from people inside the beltway who don't think Ms. Miers can handle the Supreme Court, or who had their own favorites in mind for the position. That doesn't make her any less qualified or suitable for the position, it's just that the 'inside the beltway echo-chamber' has deemed her unfit, and will continue to say so.

I am not saying she is a Michael Brown. But I am saying she is being chosen for her next job in exactly the same way and for the same reasons that Michael Brown was chosen for FEMA.

Michael Brown managed 150 disasters including four simultaneous hurricane relief efforts in Florida last year before he ran into a totally broken Louisiana emergency management system.

He was ground up in racial politics, not his response to Katrina.

"'She failed in Card's office for two reasons,' the official says. 'First, because she can't make a decision, and second, because she can't delegate, she can't let anything go. '"

I don't want a Supreme Court Justice who makes snap decisions.

I want a Justice who looks at the leftist arguments with something other than Ruth Bader Ginsburg's blind acceptance.

She was counsel, which is different from SC Justice. She will be surrounded by conservative law clerks, is my guess. Intellectually, she cant be any more "Lightweight" than Thomas, and hes done just fine, IMO. You don't have to be Al Einstein to do the right thing.

But I guess Frum is saying her inclinations and instincts are soft left. .. I'd like to see more proof of that, myself.

Well - at least we know the punctuation will be correct when I look up her decisions on FindLaw.

Perhaps this is hearsay. But it is disturbing that so many people who have worked with Miers seem to be shaking their heads right now.

It seems like Miers is Bush's replacement for Al Gonzales. . .he knows he can't nominate him because conservatives won't let him, EVEN THOUGH HE WOULD LIKE TO VERY VERY BADLY.

And if Al Gonzalez is Bush's kind of judge, why would anyone place blind faith in Bush that Miers is the kind of judge we want?

If you're really inclined to trust Bush on this, go back and look at some of his horrible personnel decisions. . .and don't forget that he thinks Alberto Gonzales should be on the court as well.

Bush appears to be saying "Trust me. Don't believe your lying eyes."

Bush should pull back her nomination, wake up and start nominating qualified people. He's making himself look silly with these unqualified nominations. This shows a lack of reality or a weakness at the top.

After these nominations, how could he be taken seriously on any emergency with China, Iran or Korea? He's spending his credibility money most unwisely.

Hoppy
