Ann Coulter Takes the Low Road
The American Thinker ^ | October 6, 2005 | Thomas Lifson

Posted on 10/05/2005 7:18:07 PM PDT by quidnunc

Ann Coulter is one of many conservative pundits criticizing the SCOTUS nomination of Harriet Miers. I relish the opportunity to debate the matter with those, like Ann, who take a stance different from mine. In fact, because I believe that serious debate is such enlightening fun, I will continue to publish views on this site that differ from mine. Sadly, Ann has taken the low road, rather than debate me on the merits of my argument in favor of Miers.

On her website today (though not in her syndicated column that contains some duplicate verbiage) she dismisses my defense of Harriet Miers on grammatical grounds. It is bad enough that she fails to deal with the substance of my argument. What makes it truly embarrassing is that she is chooses a point which is highly debatable at best. I would much rather discuss subtance rather than the fine points of grammar disputes.

-snip-

Ann would be much better off criticizing my frequent and often embarrassing typos. But best of all would be a straightforward critique of my ideas. That would be the high road. The road not taken.

Maybe I am too involved in the matter to be of sound judgment, but it seems to me that Ann has just provided support for the thesis that at least one conservative pundit trashing Miers is nothing but a pompous elitist.

By the way, Ann, if you are going to put me down as a barely-educated moron, at least click on the "contributors" link on the website whose name you dare not mention and check out my background. I have three Ivy League sheepskins on my wall, and taught at two Ivies. I don't really have to try to "sound Ivy League."

No one complained when Coulter was vicious and savage in her columns against the Left...

I ignored here then for the same reasons that I ignore her now.

Conservative movements don't win or gain anything with leaders like Coulter making immflammatory and highly emotional remarks, most of which have no facts as a basis

AC is NOT a "leader." She is a brilliant polemicist. She has never pretended to be otherwise. She says stuff which is hilarious, because it is strikingly true, and strikingly well stated.

As a polemicist, AC's premise is to be inflammatory: to make people feel something about something, in service to a principle.

AC is not W's kneepad girl, regardless of what her many fickle admirers may have fantasized about her. She is what any conservative ought to be, consistent, conscious of integrity, and smart enough to know when some politician is bamboozling.

I think Bush applied the same kind of criteria that the Navy does when choosing fighter pilots - - natural ability and well-trained, demonstrated skill. Mier has both, as a reputedly fearsome litigator who has represented some of the country's largest companies in court, including Disney and a number of other Fortune 500 behemoths. Also the managing partner of one of Texas' largest law firms. Coulter to the contrar, first-rate lawyers can come from SMU as well as from Yale, as Miers' career shows.

You had a great chance to not be an a-hole, but....

It might hurt you that the navy also thought I should TRAIN fighter pilots, but then, whose counting?

You and I BOTH know Miers aint the best, but it appears only one of us has the balls to say so.

If it takes insulting both the Navy (for their supposed lack of selectiveness) or me because I happen to hold a different point of view, then you are a small man whose opinion must not hold a lot of weight.

Your anger stems from attempting to defend an action devoid of facts to help back you up. I LOVE President Bush, but when he gets it wrong, it is our duty as Conservatives to say so. It aint about the man, its about the JOB.

" Me thinks it is only fair to give her the benefit of the doubt whether she is qualified for the position or not."

I wonder how all the hiring managers here would react to that. Tons of resumes to look through. Depending on the job the quickest way to sort through them all is by school. Then again being a good buddy of the hiring manager is a good way to make sure you skip that first few cuts.

Ann Coulter has LONG been overrated by her cult of worshippers on this forum, though in this case she is right that Miers is a lousy pick who could easily morph into a RINO on the court. Unfortuantely for Ann, her geninue concerns about Miers will be ignored after her POINTLESS attacks on Roberts. After bashing a Rehnquist Republican as "another Souter", it just makes it look like she's paint ANY nominee not personally selected by her as a "Souter".

I never understood the infatuation with loudmouth attack dog Ann Coulter. Ann lost all crediblity with me when she started DATING a Muslim-American one week after saying we should "invade all Muslim countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christinaity", and then trashed Bush for saying Islam was a religion of peace. Her worshippers on the right are just as bad as the die hard Michael Moore-ons on the left.

I miss Barbara Olsen.

"No one complained when Coulter was vicious and savage in her columns against the Left, but boy-oh-boy, let her disagree with you folks and the knives really come out."

Sumpin' wrong with that Pukin? I know she's your girlfriend, but when she's wrong, she's wrong, when she's mean, she's really mean.

Your logic is flawed. Everyone loves Bush when he does exactly what they would have told him to do. But what comes out when he does something they don't like?

Yeah, those long knives.

It's Free Republic. Deal.

I would not take the best trained, most amazing A-6 pilot and put her in an F-14. The Navy tried that, and she ended up on the bottom of the sea, dead.

Miers may be a good lawyer, but she aint no Supreme Court jurist. And at the end of these hearings, who ever defended her is going to regret it. They are going to eat her alive.

She should do us all a favor and withdraw now.

They kill me, too.

Yes, it appears as if all the Freeper cannibals are out in force tonight. They're going all over the place with this one, and tonight they have even embraced pervert-speak.

You forget to mention, of course, that many of the people will do a 180 as soon as this is far enough behind us and claim they never doubted her or anyone else for a minute.

If true-blue Conservatives like Coulter are only loved when they agree in lockstep, then just what is the point?

Hey there Mister P.D.... I don't agree with Ann on this one, but I still love her...

It's the make-up date that is so special... :-)

"The "it's a genius political move" rhetoric is getting old. I suppose not securing the borders is another genius political move on Bush's part to some how deal with terrorism. I'm just not smart enough to think on his and Rove's level."

The "Luvya Dubya" sycophants want us to trust him, but he has shown himself to be untrustworthy on the border.

In Texas, we think SMU is a snooty, elitist school.

It certainly costs as much as the East Coast schools.

I guess that shows what we know! Dang it.

"...I need more information and to see Miers in action before I will be convinced she is the best person for the job."

My position on the whole pick is pretty much summed up in your last sentence. Why didn't we pick someone we knew about? We have a republican house, senate, president. Why the super sneaky behavior? Give us someone who's known. I wanted the left to collapse in agony when Bush announced this pick. Not the left, right, and center breathing a collective "Huh?" at the announcement.

Someone, ANYONE, tell me what makes Harriet Miers superior to Luttig or even Janice Rodgers Brown.

No attacks, just share that insight with me, please?

Why is she the BEST?

Good luck.
