Miers Joins Dallas Church Breakaway Group
Wash Post/AP ^ | October 5, 2005 | Wash Post/AP

Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers is among a group of congregants of a Dallas evangelical church who recently broke away due to differences over church rules and worship styles.

The group of about 200, led by former Valley View Christian Church pastor Ron Key, formed their own church about a month ago and have been meeting on Sundays at a hotel in Dallas.

...The church opposes abortion and Hecht indicated that Miers shares those views, including the belief that life begins at conception. "It was Harriet thinking things through on her own," Hecht said.

....Valley View recently changed its pastor, with Barry McCarty replacing Key.

"He had a different vision for the church," Hecht said in a telephone interview. "We decided to go a different way."

Key, the pastor since the 1980s, said he left Valley View over philosophical differences and differences over worship styles and church governance.

Since then, Miers has "called and encouraged me a couple of times," Key said.

Protestants who have problems with their Church form another one. Catholics just simply stop going.

You know, I wish people like you would quit posting GOOD stuff about the nominee.

I want to be able to bash the President with impunity in order to raise my own conservative credentials.

I find the fact that she joined a breakaway church a POSITIVE. It shows she has strong convictions, and isn't a go-with-the-consensus kind of person. Less likely to be a Kennedy or O'Connor, in other words.

Great, we need to hear about the internal gossip and and squabbles in her church? All so we can find the answer to the one and only question everyone cares about, abortion.

I long for the day that one-issue myopia no longer has to not only dominate, but completely obliterate any other considerations.

And if she disagrees with you on a chapter? What then?

LOL. Some have joked that most Baptist church starts don't start by planting new congregations, but by "splits" in existing congregations.
It sounds from this article like the new pastor was going off in some new areas to probably increase the size of the congregation. And the former pastor led a group to hang on to the Biblical fundamentals that had been a part of the church when he was there. So this is no big deal.Except is shows that Ms. Meirs will stick by her beliefs inpite of what's going in in the world around her.
This may a good character trait as a Supreme Court justice.

I agree that this suggests Miers is a person with convictions. I started out disappointed with this pick, but I'm liking her more each day.

You mean she won't worship at the church of stare decisis?
