Understand...we gotta keep the DIMs off-balance.
Do you duty...check...check...and review. Then, remember...it was the President's personal choice, not a committee of yahoos.
If you let Ginsburg get over with all the BAGGAGE she had...the choice is clear. Either have solid proof she shouldn't be there or vote yes. Not mindless YES. WE expect you to do your job...ADVICE and CONSENT.
If good, solid reasons are found that she should not be confirmed, so be it. But, not having been a judge ain't a good reason. A little sanity in the mix is always good.
My two cents.
For a sitting Republican senator to express reservations is very newsworthy. Remember, Roberts got all 55 votes from the Senate Republicans, with not a world of criticism. For a former Senate Leader to have said this is very interesting, IMHO.
Personally, I am disappointed in the nomination. No one can say with a straight face that W couldn't have found a better-qualified conservative scholar or jurist.
She compares pretty favorably to John Roberts, who was an inspired choice

You cannot say she or anyone else would have been the best possible candidate until we see them build their track record in the court.
Bush could have just as easy picked Brown or Owens only to have them back-slide a couple of years down the road. Amazing how not having to answer to anyone changes your priorities.
Good thats what the hearings are for, Lott is just doing what our taxes pay him to do.
Agreed - please see #4.
"I need to know a lot more about her, her experience and her level of competence and what is her philosophy. I really don't know this lady and I do think I owe it to my constituents and to my own conscience to do due diligence and find out actually who this person is," he said.
We of course do not get to select, but we do have the right in law and under God to express our opinion. That is what I am doing. And as a not to subtle reminder that and election is forth coming in little over a year. I will be paying close attention to this issue and others to help me decide my vote.
It is not impolite to question someone's qualifications for such an office. Given his responsibility to give his consent if she is qualified, such questions are ethically mandatory. Lott is many things, but I don't think I've ever heard him be intentionally rude. He can be a little self-serving at times, which can appear rude, but here, he is actually giving a nod to his solemn role in this process, which is entirely appropriate.
Didn't he vote for Ruth Bader Ginsburgh?
I don't know what the difference is, but it was striking to me. Actually, Brownback didn't literally say he would vote against her 'if she answered like Roberts'; just that he would vote against her if she answered that Roe v Wade is "settled law" - which is what Roberts said about it.
During the Roberts confirmation though, Brownback did specifically say that the next SC nominee would have to be more forthcoming about views on Roe v Wade in order to get his vote. I don't know why the seeming double standard.
Exactly, she was oneof the ones who screened him so she must like the way he thinks.
email him and encourage him to be open. We need a constitionalist on the bench. I believe that Harriet Meirs is just that. At first I was sceptical too.
Agreed, Lott is something of a loose cannon in the wake of his ouster. Even so I don't think he would have dared do this had Miers been a stronger nominee.
Nail on the head my friend..nail on the head.
He did the same before he met Roberts and after he met him, supported him.
We will see what happens when Brownback meets with Miers.
DITTO!!!!!!!!!!!
It concerns me that Sen. Lott expresses concern about Miers, but, evidently was not concerned enough about Ginsberg to vote against her confirmation.
Can we be honest? If Ginsberg can get more than 90 votes, Miers surely should.
