Lawyers representing a co-defendant of indicted House Majority Leader Tom DeLay have sent a letter to the makers of a new film about the DeLay investigation, saying they will seek a subpoena that would order the filmmakers to turn over a copy of the film and all unused footage from the project.
The Big Buy chronicles Travis County, Texas prosecutor Ronnie Earle as he pursued the investigation that led to DeLay's indictment on conspiracy charges last week and on money-laundering charges yesterday. Filmmakers Mark Birnbaum and Jim Schermbeck describe the film as "a Texas noir political detective story" about the Earle/DeLay investigation.

Earle had better worry about his law license, because this was one score settling indictment too many. Regardless on whether he gets DeLay's scalp, the Lone Star GOP and citizens who don't like out of control DAs will have had enough of his antics.
I can hear the assistants in his office now: Ronnie, I told you that you were taking this vendetta too far. Man, now you've done it. We're all screwed and just because of your hate for DeLay.
Earle knows he has blown it. That is why he is grasping at straws with the new indictment. Just sit back and enjoy the show.
Since the first indictment was a nullity on it's face, he raced out and got a second GJ to issue an indictment in a very complex case on the first day or two of their sitting. This guy is really, really desperate. And when you are desperate, you really screw up...big time.
Not to mention he took the 2nd indictment to the GJ at noon yesterday BEFORE they even completed their orientation. The stink here in Austin is sky high.
IMHO it was not gerrymandering to redraw our districts. My mother and I shared Lamar Smith and we lived over 300 miles apart. Our district was only a 1/2 mile wide in places, chosen to carefully corral Republican voters. My city or over 100,000 had 3 different reps at the time.
The only thing that can save Earle's bacon is a Dimwit disciplinary committee for the Bar. The Texas Supremes are all Republicans and not likely inclined to be lenient with this fool.
bttt
I can't think of any better means of sticking it to these film makers than by asking them to turn over all of their work product.
I think Earlie has been too cozy with the Dems and with the movie folks. The other thread about Landmark Legal's FOIA request and now this. And I don't think DeLay has even begun to fight back. I think old Ronnie will regret his actions.
shameless bump. I think this is a story worth reading.
Hey ronnie, there coming to take you away.
Better yet...remember the line in "Hunt for Red October" when the Russian sub was the launching torpedos at the Red October. The Red October's captain turned into the torpedos and basically smashed them to bits before they were able to arm themselves. Then, quickly, to avoid having it happen again, the attacking Russian sub captain told his crew to set the safeties to zero.
But this time around, the attacking Russian sub got "aquired" by its' own torpedos. Before the fish killed their own sub, the 2nd in Command says to the captain: "You arrogant b*stard - now you've killed us all!"
It's ronnie with a little r.
told ya, Dark Wing.
""he raced out and got a second GJ to issue an indictment in a very complex case on the first day or two of their sitting. ""
I believe the new grand jury was empaneled at noon and he managed to bulldoze them into an indictment within 4 hours or so.
Just incredible.
