I just saw her friend interviewed of Fox News. She said "In Texas, we were all LBJ Democrats," then moved to the GOP as the Democrats got more liberal.

So...they were LBJ Democrats.

I remember LBJ, and he wasn't a Reagan Conservative by any means.

They also said that President Bush said "I never once talked with Harriet about abortion."

I am going to fight this horrible appointment tooth and nail, calling all my Conservative Pro-Life friends and urging them to call Conservative Senators...we deserved a heavyweight Constitutionalist and we got a lawyer, the type of which can be found in thousands of law firms across the country.

A Freeper said earlier "If another GOP president were looking for a Supreme Court Justice, would people have settled on Harriet Miers as the best choice?"

And, of course, the answer is NO!

It doesn't matter that she is a Christian, what matters is she's not one of the country's major Constitutional jurists...she's just President Bush's friend and ex-lawyer.

The Conservatives have been stabbed in the back by this choice.

"Read my lips, more Scalia and Thomas..."

NOT!

Ed

Given her response to Roberts, I could have predicted what she'd say about Miers, but it doesn't make it any less nonsensical.

Much as I would have loved to wage direct war on the Dems, the cards just didn't fall the right way for an Owen, Brown, Luttig, etc nomination. If Rehnquist had retired first, we could have gotten one of those in either as cheif or as an associate justice with Thomas or Scalia going to cheif. In that case, Roberts would have been the perfect "olive branch" candidate for O'Connor's seat.

As it is, if Bush had nominated y/our preferred candidate for this particular seat after most of the Dems voted for Roberts, they would claim that they are being reasonable while performing the most unreasonable act they possibly could: a filibuster. Certainly Brown and Owen do not deserve another filibuster, especially given that the Dems would have a defense against the charge of obstructionism on this one.

IMHO, Bush did what he had to do. I believe this pick upholds his campaign promise of a strict constructionist, while acknowledging the cards he was dealt. We'll see.

The choice of Miers has a ring of Souter-2 in it.

GOP base needs to tell their Senators its time to choose: It's Miers' job or their. Full revolt if Miers is confirmed.

It would be funny to see Miers confirmed by a lopsided Democrat-heavy vote, then go on to vote in lockstep with Thomas and Scalia, eventually overturning Roe.

If his appointees mess up, the (R)'s will have to answer for it. We'll just have to wait and see. This woman is all but confirmed.

Ann Coulter just took apart President Bush's SCOTUS nominee on the air during her appearance on the Mike Rosen show here in Denver on 850am KOA.

No, she did not. She criticized her. But to take her apart Harriet would have had to have been present to counter-punch.

Ann Counter is a media whore... she says the most outrageous things just to promote controversy and her book.
One of the best points about Harriet Meiers is that she will be confirmed. Most of other candidates mentioned have long paper trails. They would be opposed by the usual suspects, the Dems, but also by the RINOs like the Maine Twins.
John Fund said it best. Almost the only person who could get confirmed in this poisoned atmosphere is someone who has been in the witness protection program.

I'm not putting you down, but why the hell does anyone care what Ann Coulter says or thinks?

Like someone else said, "Ann calm down and go eat something".

That lady isn't happy unless she's complaining about something. Every time I hear her speak I can't help but feel sorry for the poor guy who'll get stuck with her as a wife someday (if she likes boys). I do not understand why so many find her appealing. You couldn't get me drunk enough to find that hag attractive. The rule ought to be to never post her picture on these threads.

I'm listening to Ann on Hannity's show right now

The only argument she has is that we don't know anything about Meirs and the President didn't pick someone they know

And now praises Roberts ... gee, I recall she trashed that pick also

Sorry Ann ... you gotta give me something else to go on

Otherwise you sound like a 5yr old who didn't get what you wanted and are going to hold your breath

Oh ... now she is saying this was a revenge pick

Ann went on and on about why this was a lousy choice.

Great... with friends like this we can stop just slamming our own fingers in the door for fun.

She's a shrill harpy.

Coulter was also on Hannity's radio program today.

She is not a happy camper with this nomination.

I say nominate Ann for the Supreme Court. Now those hearings would be fun to watch. Can you imagine her ripping Chucky Shumer or Ted Kennedy?

I think Bush knows the Republicans in the Senate are TOO WEAK, and so Bush is just trying to get anyone through.

The President today made some excellent observations about discontent expressed by some conservative "talking heads" (yes, there are those among our ranks also) re his appointment. One of those pointed observations pertained to Miers and the fact that it is her lifetime accomplishments and her actual performance, without publicity or drawing attention to herself that distinguishes her.

Ann has distinguished herself, primarily, by her columns, books and appearances on conservative talk shows, with the resulting publicity therefrom. One wonders how she would have fared had she used her mind, her constitutional knowledge and legal talents as Ms. Miers has, minus all the fanfare and attention-drawing behavior.

We find people in all walks of life who are more interested in knocking others down, under the mistaken impression that such tactics build themselves up, than they are in making informed and objective observations.

The President advised us to listen to the hearings and judge this nominee after hearing her and watching her.
