It does appear that way. Ever seen the Schwarzennegger flick "The Running Man"? That's what I often think when I read some of the posts in the threads here, and elsewhere. They wish we were back in Rome, with they in the stands to give the thumbs up or down, to the gladiators in the ring.
She cooks a mean donut.
I realize that a lot of internet bomb-throwers don't grasp the subtleties of interpersonal communications, so your bewilderment is quite understandable.
However, Miers rose to the top of a large law firm. Which meant she can be inclusive and nice when needed and bite like a tiger shark when the need arises as well.
Excellent analysis. More on our side should read this one.
It is time that someone who embodies the simpleness of word, and faithfulness to the original intent of our forefathers, was put on the bench. Maybe then we can cut through all of the legal gymnastics of SCOTUS of late and get back to a simpler, more common sense, God fearing approach to interpreting the Constitution.
From what I hear Miers has the greatest respect for our forefathers who were absolute geniuses with regards to the creation of this great country of ours. She has the makings of a great originalist with regards to the U.S. Constitution.
President Bush is working to negotiate the original treaty, as I understand. The problem has not been Israel -- it has been the surrounding countries. This then has led to the brawls with Palestine, and the surrounding countries, in "defending their lack of honor" to go into cahoots with Saddam's thuggery. What it made these countries? Ultimately subject to Saddam's tyranny.
You don't bargain with bullies. And these countries did. Foolish, they were.
It's called a "paradox."
I sincerely hope that enough information will filter out in the ensuing weeks that conservatives will become not only comfortable with, but enthusiastically supportive of, Ms. Miers. I just wish I were a bit more sure...
On one hand it really cracks me up; the usual Libertarian types constantly kvetching for a "we, the people" type of candidate; President Bush gives them such in a SCOTUS nominee, and they get hysterically negative.
I suppose they are only supposed to be happy when it is one of their "own" party who gets that nomination. This then, belies their so-called "libertarian" platform of "we, the people".
Nah... it's more like "we, of our own kind" is OKAY. But not anyone else...
As another episode of "how the world turns" continues.. I bring you back to the regular programming..
LOL! ;>
Good post.
(Ive never seen Bill Crystal make such an fool of himself.)
Good post, this should be glued to the top.
I'm also pleased about her interest in tort reform and the possiblity that she is not beholden to the trial lawyers.
This is a pretty damn good article.
Most of the article (though not all) avoids condescension towards conservatives, and even acknowledges that since GWB has unquestionably broken trust with conservatives (even moderates) on his domestic agenda, that it is hard to warm to him on major domestic acts.
And the author understands the "Souter problem" and acknowledges that the issue is real. Unlike a lot of the Bush bots here at FR, the author hasn't just put his head under the covers but sees the real and serious problems that this administration has from the conservative perspective. That makes the piece much more persuasive. It acknowledges that like it or not, fair or not, you can't just separate the judicial nomination process from the rest of the actions of this administration. Trust is not immediate from conservatives, to say the least.
All that said....you can't but be impressed by her showing up at work 5 a.m. And her speech before the GOP lawyers' group was, apparently, solidly conservative.
And as much as we all love blood and guts and would relish seeing Schumer splattered all over everywhere, I don't think anyone is going to wring their hands if that doesn't happen, yet Meiers becomes a solid "yes woman" to a Chief Justice, who, with two four-star generals named Scalia and Thomas at his side, is able to convince Justice Kennedy from time to time to join them. The point that we need to keep our eyes on 5 votes is well taken.
Not that it matters much. She will be confirmed. We just need to hope and pray that she becomes a yes woman and doesn't get any wild ideas about finding a "third way" or something else to make Katie Courie and the Wash Post fawn over her. Hopefully her faith will sustain her and keep her from that sort of idolatry.
Probably feels its Congresss job.
But, but, but, she has never been a Judge!!! -sarc.
