Since "Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.", I and others think it's a good idea to centralize what the goes on in the Senate (or House).
So if you see something happening on the Senate/House floor and you don't want to start a new thread to ask if anyone else just heard what you heard, you can leave a short note on who said what and about what and I'll try and find it the next day in THE RECORD. Or if you see a thread that pertains to the Senate, House, or pretty much any GOV'T agency please link your thread here.
If you have any suggestions for this thread please feel free to let me know.
Here's a few helpful links.
C-SPAN what a great thing. Where you can watch or listen live to most Government happenings.
C-SPAN 1 carries the HOUSE.
C-SPAN 2 carries the SENATE.
C-SPAN 3 (most places web only) carries a variety of committee meetings live or other past programming.
OR FEDNET has online feed also.
A great thing about our Government is they make it really easy for the public to research what the Politicians are doing and saying (on the floor anyway).
THOMAS where you can see a RECORD of what Congress is doing each day. You can also search/read a verbatim text of what each Congressmen/women or Senator has said on the floor or submitted 'for the record.' [This is where the real juicy stuff can be found.]
Also found at Thomas are Monthly Calendars for the Senate Majority and Senate Minority
And Monthly Calendars for the House Majority and Roll Call Votes can be found here.
THE WAR DEPARTMENT (aka The Dept. of Defense)
I am with Sen Stevens on this damn McCain amendment, treat the Terrorists as they treat others......
Thanks for looking, Txsleuth. I hope this story hasn't gone into a black hole.
Do you think it is Bush's fault that people are forced to keep their mouths shut, or suffer the consequences later???
I keep seeing this written, but I don't see how we can blame President Bush....how about the Congress, especially the Senate...AND the American people...
This whole PC crapola is taking away so much from public discussion that could be useful....but take Bill Bennett's problem...some are calling for his firing as a talk show host...jeez, louise...
YET, those same people, when something like Katrina happens, want "A national dialogue on race in America"...well, how can we have a dialogue, when NO ONE take the time to listen/read the whole of someone's thoughts before going for their throats?????
IF judicial nominees feel hard pressed to speak their minds, I beleive it is the fault of congress's past that have made ABORTION the be all/end all of a person's "right" to be a judge...based on that one opinion...
Actually, go back to the Supreme Court that made that a LAW based on a "right" that was not spelled out in the Constitution....
NOW, re: Miers, I heard/read that when she was President of the ABA, she was against the ABA taking a stand about pro-life as a body...I got the impression that she thought that state, or local ABA groups could...but not national...
THAT sounds like a state's rights attitude, which unless I am wrong, sounds like a good first step in getting the Roe v. Wade ruling overturned.
Byrd is up babbling about how the US invaded Iraq, who did absolutely nothing to deserve it...and that they didn't provoke anything...
Absolutely NO ties to 9/11 or WMDS....well, MAYBE 9/11...but WMDS...not so fast bucko!!!
Also, why are these people still fighting about that we went in....when it is too late to fight that fight.
I wonder if he voted Yes to Clinton's resolution to regime change in Iraq back in 98?????
I cannot believe that old coot is running again...l Freepers need to get behind the young man running against him Hiram (something, I forgot his last name, dangit).
Alert!!! Alert!!!!
John Warner has been speaking about presenting an amendment to the defense spending bill that he had to get cleared through the Parlementarian, to find out if it is germane...
He just stated that the Parlementarian ruled that it is germane....but he hasn't spelled out the amendment....
THEN, he said that "to save time for the Senators" he had agreed with Senator LEVIN....to take over 100 AMENDMENTS and roll them into a MANAGER'S PACKAGE....which would require only ONE vote....
and attach his amendment to those 101 Amendments!!!!
WE have NO IDEA what those amendments are...they haven't been in this week hardly at all because of the Jewish holiday...
Sen. Stevens is trying to object....but he has Levin and Warner confusing the heck out of everyone!!!
I HATE IT WHEN THE HAVE HUGH BILLS THAT WE KNOW NOTHING ABOUT!!!!
That is LOUSY! I'm starting to hate them all - Republicans and Democrats alike.
You just know it isn't gonna be good. I don't trust Warner to begin with, but Levin...there are no bigger snakes than him.
def....I am so sorry, I forgot to put your name on post #25....it is for you also...
I just got off the phone with both of my Senator's offices...and was very firm that I am not liking what is going on right now....
How all of this wrangling is going on, but WE THE TAXPAYERS, have no clue what those 100 amendments are....
I wish I felt better, after calling, but I don't...shoot!
When I called the offices of Cornyn and Hutchison, I mentioned that if it was just dems...then I would at least hope that the Reps would make sure it is all on the up and up....but, when you have a bi-partisan bill that has so many amendments and ONLY ONE Senator, Senator Stevens, objecting...
I get really nervous...that is how so much pork gets into these bills....but, in this case...I am worrying about that, and I know that McCain, Warner, and Graham were wanting to have investigations into Gitmo torture...
which I FEEL, would hurt the War on Terror more than help at this point....and I am afraid that may be what is being hidden from us also...
See my last post....I am worried it is more than pork...
but, wouldn't you think that after Katrina...they would be leaving the pork off????
Also, this has the supplemental spending for Iraq and Afghanistan on it...so the Senators can do all kinds of damage and then blame BUSH for not giving the troops what they need....
Just Damn....
Thanks for the ping. Stevens is unhappy.
That is what they do with all important bills
The last military bill they packed on all kinds of Pork
And then sit back and let the President take the hit for all the spending
That is why I get so anger when so many yell about the President
They NEVER point the finger at Congress
Stevens is freaking out BIG TIME!
I think his objection is mostly related to the time it will take to slog through the added stuff. He wants the authorization bill to go through more quickly.
Stevens is very upset. What did he say about his friendship with Warner. It does seem to be a problem with getting through it all.
Stevens just said to Warner .. that their friendship is very close to the brink
WOW ... he is HOT!
Something about how Warner lied and said adding on this amendments have never been done before
Stevens is TICKED .. said their friendship of close to the brink
Akakka (sp?) says How it effects the security of out land .. it's that serious
WOW ... What was in those amendments??
sorry for all my typos
I can't figure out what's going on, but I hear Warner using lots of weasel words.
