Facing Abductor, Girls Proved Martial Arts Training {10 year olds whup teacher]
Washington Post ^ | October 4, 2005 | By Jamie Stockwell and Tom Jackman, Washington Post Staff Writers

When the masked man attacked them inside their bedroom in the middle of the night Sunday, the twin 10-year-old girls responded just as they had been taught in their martial arts class: They fought back.

The commotion woke their parents, who rushed in and thought they recognized the tall, ponytailed intruder. The girls' father whacked him with the base of a table lamp and yanked off part of his mask. As the intruder ran from the Vienna townhouse, the parents were pretty sure it was "Andy," an instructor at Mountain Kim Martial Arts studio in Vienna, where their daughters take classes every week, the mother told police.

Hours later, Andrew Jacobs, 42, a part-time instructor at the studio who holds a black belt, was arrested at the brick house he shares with his sister, not far from the girls' home. Yesterday, he appeared in court, with a black eye and bruises on his face, on charges of assault, attempted abduction and burglary. A judge ordered him held without bond.

"Sheesh! What bunk! Just be careful who you trust, period."

A man who has a pony tail in this year of Our Lord 2005 has a screw loose somewhere.

The lamp that the dad used must have been made of ugly stick.

This guy may be pretty dumb, but he'll be bested by his lawyer, who will claim that his client was merely giving the on-site mid-term exam, and now that he's giving his students an A++, he should be released.

Could you do one of those "Separated at Birth" side by side of this guy and the alien from "Alien"?

Bet they look identical when they smile.

There are some high level belts in my daughter's class, and I seriously doubt that any one of them could overpower the instructor.

I'm a blackbelt, 5'11, and 210, and there's no way I could whip my instructor. Not going to happen. We had a guy in our classes that tried out for the olympics once and even he couldn't defeat our instructor.

When I started sparring a lot I was surprised to learn that the best advantage to have is neither strength nor speed. Both are good, but the best thing to have on your side is reach. If you're tall, and your opponent is short, it is so much easier on you. There's a guy in our class that is higher rank than me, definitely faster than me, and maybe a little bit stronger, but I can whoop him 8 out of 10 times because he's only 5'6'. My instructor is impossible because he's 6'1', very tough, and fast. And he stands in this odd way that leaves you no target to attack but allows him to attack you.

and going to class once or twice a week for a few years doesn't exactly make a kid Steven Segal.

No, you need the poneytail for that.

"second, it doesn't matter how well trained a kid is -- she is NEVER going to be able to overpower a healthy male adult."

That's true, but she can cause him some discouragement while daddy comes in from next door.

I wouldn't like to get kicked in the nose by even a 10-year-old girl, if I had my druthers.

Unfortunate that this father didn't believe in adequately protecting his family by obtaining the proper training in, and owning, firearms.

THe same kind of idiot who claims he was merely trying to tie the girls up so he could rob the house - that he was not trying to kidnap them.

The high level belts in my daughter's class are all kids, since it is a kid's class. So I'm sure you'll agree, given your own experience, that there is no way even a very well trained kid can overpower an adult who is determined to do her harm.

The story does not mention anywhere that the ten year old twins won the fight or "whupped" him. The story does say that the commotion and their screaming awoke their father who then whacked the creep with a lamp.

That's an important distinction for those who believe that ten year old blue belts could defeat an adult male.

However this story is important and serves as a reminder that martial arts schools are not required to run background checks.

Parents should not assume that their children are safe with their martial arts instructors.
