Hackett to Challenge DeWine for Senate (Ohio)
Associated Press ^ | October 3, 2005 | DAVID HAMMER,

WASHINGTON - Paul Hackett, the Iraq War veteran from Cincinnati who was hailed by national Democrats for his narrow loss this summer in a heavily Republican House district, has decided to challenge Mike DeWine for U.S. Senate in 2006.

Spokesman David Woodruff, who served as Hackett's campaign manager in his special election campaign for the 2nd District House seat against Jean Schmidt, confirmed Hackett's run Monday evening. Hackett had spent the last month hinting at a run against Ohio's senior senator, who is in his second six-year term.

Hackett was flying back Monday evening from Washington after meeting with Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada and the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, Woodruff said.

Reid's spokeswoman, Tessa Hefen, would not confirm or deny the meeting Monday, but Woodruff later said Reid gave Hackett the confidence to run.

"He found overwhelming support from the leaders of the Democratic Party, campaign organizations and staff," Woodruff said.

DeWine campaign manager Matt Carle said DeWine has a a good record as a senator and "we look forward to presenting that record to the voters next year."

Hackett drew national attention by earning 48 percent of the vote Aug. 2 in Ohio's 2nd District, which voted 64 percent for President Bush last year. Schmidt and other Republicans have said the summertime special election for the House should not be considered as a bellwether for other congressional elections.

Per latest Zogby (ok, it's Zogby), Hackett leads DeWine by 8 points.

Zogby = President Kerry with 311 electoral votes.

That poll also has Harris within a few points of Nelson in Florida, something that no other poll has shown.

Its junk.

War hero my aching arse! He was and remains an ambulance chaser who was called to active duty. Probably spent his entire tour purusing contracts for MREs. He has earned the John Kerry purple shaft award complete with the barbed wire cluster to be proudly worn while telling war stories in the local Demonrat headquarters.

There are enough people upset with the RINO dewine and voinovich that I wouldn't be surprised if people vote for Hackett as a protest vote. I'm thinking about it...

Hackett could win if DeWine's doubleflanked enough. Don't underestimate him.

The gun issue could kill him.

Exactly.

Let the conservatives stay home or vote for third parties. When the Rats take over, we can then revolt with a clear conscience.

If I remember correctly, he was a Public Affairs Officer. Back in the days before computers, we called them Remington Chairmobile Raiders.

IMHO, it doesn't matter. Taft and his terrible administration has left Ohio in such political shambles that a green, one legged dogcatcher with web feet could knock DeWine out of his seat.

And, if the truth were known, it might not be such a loss, either. DeWine is a disgrace to the GOP -- and until the Ohio mess is cleaned up -- at least two election cycles -- Ohio is lost to the Pubs. (Which they richly deserve after the disgraceful antics displayed by their gross mis-use of their office(S) and mandate.

Hackett is a Democrat who shows conservative images and poses as a conservative, but if you listen to him talk, you have to say lunatic fringe..

Now, how are Ohio Pubbies going to answer this?

DeWine should step aside and support a candidate that could create some excitement and win this in a slugfest if it comes to that. Perhaps Jim Petro or Doug White or Rob Portman???
