Sitting atop the same leather chair used by his mentor, the late William H. Rehnquist, (Roberts promised to ensure equal justice. Roberts is no stranger to the high court. As an appellate lawyer, he argued three dozen cases before the court, and is familiar with his colleagues who previously sat in judgment of him.

But the new chief's first day didn't offer the most exciting docket. The court heard arguments in IBP Inc. v. Alvarez and Tum v. Barber Foods, companion cases that asked the court to decide whether employees should be compensated for the waiting or walking between mandatory activities.

I suppose your right. There couldn't be a better person in the legal profession than John Roberts to get 'on the job training' from on how to be a Judge. I hope she's a fast learner and doesn't have a warped point of view on the constitution, assuming she's read it.

It's kind of interesting and ironic that Ted Olsen was arguing a case before Judge Roberts on his very first day as Chief Justice. Both are men I admire, one far more recently than the other. I believe our new Chief Justice is going to be one of the great ones.

I am guessing that Harriet Miers played no small part in getting John Roberts that job in the first place.
