Oct. 3, 2005 Harriet Ellan Miers is White House counsel and was formerly President Bush's personal lawyer in Texas. She first served in the White House as staff secretary and was deputy chief of staff before she was named counsel upon Alberto Gonzales' transition to attorney general.
When he was the governor of Texas, Bush once publicly introduced Miers as a "pit bull in size 6 shoes."
Born and raised in Dallas, Miers earned her undergraduate degree in mathematics and her law degree from Southern Methodist University. In addition to her legal career, she served one term on the Dallas City Council.
Miers, 60, broke barriers for women throughout her career. She reportedly was the first woman hired by the prestigious Dallas law firm Locke Purnell Boren Laney & Neely, where she became a successful commercial litigator. She also became the first female president of the Dallas Bar Association in 1985 and was the first woman elected president of the Texas Bar Association in 1992.
Miers met Bush in the 1980s, according to published reports, and she was counsel for his 1994 campaign for governor. He appointed her chair of the Texas Lottery Commission in 1995.
Miers then was president of Locke, Purnell, Rain & Harrell and co-managing partner of Locke Liddell & Sapp before she joined the White House in 2001.
In addition, Miers was named one of the Top 50 Most Influential Lawyers by the National Law Journal in 1998, and she received numerous other awards from groups including the Dallas Women Lawyers Association, the Anti-Defamation League and the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers.
Since he won't be running again, that's a safe bet.
...perhaps Rove believes the RATs will "Bork" her and pave the way for a Janis Rogers Brown ... I remember when the RATs did the same thing to Nixon and Hainesworth was the sacrificial goat.
That could be said of ANY Justice and the Administration under which he was appointed.
Why impossible?
The point is not that the President is a coward, dear sir. The point is that there are too many cowards in the Senate (lilke Susan Collins) who would NOT VOTE FOR a controversial nominee. What good would it do to Judge Brown to appoint her and send her through the meatgrinder of hearings, only to have her DEFEATED?
You people seem to play fast and loose with oother people's lives. Judge Brown has already been through this once. She is not someone to be placed in that situation simply to "make a point."
Look, the view apparently is that NO established judge with a track record of decisions can get by this particular Senate, so they have to be people with no paper trail.
:~)
In your attempt to categorize people you sound foolish. Stop digging.
Perhaps President Bush doesn't like to use people as cannon-fodder. Just a thought.
Amazing that even though we have never met each other you would like to think that you know me and my people well enough to assign your logic to my reasoning.
Let me educate you a little on my thought process. I am a conservative, "my people" are conservatives. When life time appointments to the Supreme Court are made I would like to know that the person appointed to the position is the most qualified and reflects my point of view on certain key issues.
When I am not convinced that this is the case I engage people in civil discourse on this forum to determine their point of view. I do not call people names or try to marginalize their point of view by placing them into made up categories that only I understand.
If this sounds like what you do also, you might just be one of my people.
Yep. Some would be complaining. You better believe it.
If you want a Google GMail account, FReepmail me.
They're going fast!
You're welcome.
We'll all see what Bush Jr. hath wrought.
A Rehnquist?
Or another Souter-Kennedy-O Connors?
Time will tell.
Really? Then WHY did FEMA under Brown BUY and SHIP 100 million dollars worth of ice around the country and few ever reached the katrina-Rita victims.
A sign of a well run organization?
If you believe in croneyism then I guess you're content.
I'm glad he's gone so he can go back to judging Arabian horses.
Maybe he was good at it.
Certainly we agree that the fact that Ms. Miers never has been married should not, standing alone, be an issue.
Why are you trying to distract attention to Miers' credentials, which are very important, by focusing on Gonzales', because his no longer really matter.
which are very important, by focusing on Gonzales'
And most of the hysterics are male posters, which I also find interesting.
You were dead on with post #232.
I'll admit flat out to you that my primary bitch is her age, not race or gender.
