Harriet Miers
"Osama bin Laden says that your fruit basket will be arriving shortly along with his sincerest gratitude."
Get a grip..
I decided this long before this incident.

I pick the qualified, hard charging conservative like Luttig.
My 5 years comment was directed to the comment that she could turn out to be the most conservative justice we've ever had...
What are you hearing and seeing, besides a bunch of handwringing from people who want her to have more of a public record than she does? (A record they can then use to destroy the candidate.)
The president says he knows her and believes she is suited for the job. I believe him. She doesn't need to have a "record" that establishes her "conservative" credentials to our satisfaction. She doesn't even need to be a lawyer.
Most of those bitching about this choice, are lawyers. A break from their lunacy would be nice.
"I think his MBA is showing.....GWB isn't a typical politico so his decisions are sometimes much deeper and harder to read."
Quite possible.
But that same logic applies to campaign finance and to prescription drugs.
Yet, on the other hand....somehow, the idea that "Bush and Rove have a secret plan" just doesn't ring true.
Possible, but Luttig was a sure thing conservative with a paper trail to prove it. Given we have 55 votes in the Senate, and Ruth B. G. got 90+ votes, having to go stealth and play the "trust me" game just stinks.
"Harry Reid supports her, and suggested she would be acceptible. In other words, she is NOT a Scalia or Thomas."
"BS."
What a well reasoned response! you sure convinced me. Not.
On Drudge right now:
"HUMAN EVENTS: Harriet Miers contributed $250 to Clinton for President Committee on December 23, 1991, according to Federal Election Commission records. She did not contribute any money to the reelection of President Bush senior, who would face off against the Democrat Clinton in the 1992 presidential election. In 1988, Miers contributed $1,000 to the Democratic presidential primary campaign of then-Sen. Al Gore. At the time Vice President George H.W. Bush was in a Republican presidential primary fight with then-Sen. Dole and Kemp. She did not contribute to any of these Republicans.."
"On a conference call held by the Federalist Society this morning, former RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie admitted sheepishly that Miers was a Democrat througout the 1980s; asked specifically about the Gore contribution, Gillespie said that she was a 'conservative' democrat who later became a republican... Developing..."
Reid did say she was on the no-filibuster list. Why do you think that is?
Also, the donor, who donated to the rats, was listed as Mrs Miers. I believe that this lady is single and not married.
The mickey mouse club.

Nationally, yes. For the Texas state ABA, probably not.
... the State Bar of Texas, under Miers' leadership, fought to have the issue put to a vote of the full ABA membership.
Miers used the voice of the State Bar of Texas to advocate the entire (national) membership of the ABA have voice in obtaining a position. One should not infer her position on the underlying issue from that advocacy. Further, the ABA speaks as a unit, even if some geographic regions render contrary positions.
I suspect we'll know more very soon.
She does look like a lifelong tobacco fiend, those look like smoker's wrinkles to me. And more than a passing resemblance to Helen Thomas, although a Helen with a full makeover.
Or maybe an applehead.
But what the heck, it's a homely court. She's prettier than seven out of eight. :)
Good grief... where have we heard THAT before???
BOHICA
Well I do admire & respect jay. However, I am really fed up with "moderates" Republicans do to their conservative base what Democrats do to the black vote............. I really hate to quote Al Sharpton but they treat us like the "mistress" not the wife
I agree with what you say about running from the party, but IF it turns out the party diverges en masse from your core beliefs, then it's time to leave.
I am not judging Harriet Miers. I'm judging the fantastic imprudence of the President in his method of nominating a replacement for this seat.
So she is damned if she did and damned if she didn't.
"She has never been married and has no children. I have never trusted so-called Conservatives without children. It is a quintessential part of understanding the damage that liberalism does to society."
Please stop distorting my posts.
That is a valid although not absolute pro-life position, and unless you say she was lying, or that no one is pro-life unless they think that the babies of rape victims should never be aborted (as I do), then you cannot call her a 'pro-abort.'
In the interest of factual comments and Biblical principles about not bearing false witness, you were completely out of line in your post about this fine First Lady.
A conservative convert nominee with a deceiving paper trail, so that RINOs and moderate dems have political cover in supporting her? I hope so. But if true, then Bush & Co. are making things much more complicated than they need to be. Republicans have a majority in the Senate and Bush is not up for reelection. Just gear up the Senate Republicans to go nuclear and push through a true KNOWN conservative in short order. There would have been an explosive outcry, and then the next topic of the day would have replaced it in the headlines. Now, we've got an unknown, and, possible, a liberal. Recent converts often revert back to their old ways. Ugh.
I do, however, agree that her lack of experience as a judge should not matter. On Constitutional matters, all that matters is whether she can read the text or not, and whether you can make logical arguments based on it. In fact, judges sometimes get sucked in to the legal culture and forget this simple fact.
You can count me as one of the above. Actually, I was pretty liberal. Having been on "the other side", I feel especially able to deconstruct their arguments and reasoning. Memories of my idiot Democrat days make me a staunch conservative, probably more so than most "all my life" conservatives that I know (not freepers though, I mean In Real Life).
Another thing, I only fairly recently became "pro-life", but way before that, I thought that Roe V Wade was terrible law and would have thrown it out in a heartbeat..
