On Bill Bennnet's show this morning, they tracked her political giving. She supported Al Gore in 1988, along with other dems. But around 1994, her contributions turned and stayed Republican. Do we have Bill Clinton to thank for this?

One more thing; I think it may be possible to be pro-choice and anti-Roe. Send the matter back to the states, where it belongs.

Exactly. Amazingly, even some of my most liberal, "secular humanist" friends (the thoughtful ones) are anti-Roe for the same reason I am. It has nothing to do with the outcome, but rather that Roe got the law wrong, and the Judiciary acted like the Legislative branch.

Big deal. Owen is also pro-life, but she's younger, more qualified and married with kids.....

I'd bet my bottom dollar that a lot of these so-called conservatives with their over the top emotional outbursts are regulars on DU.....

I would think the ad hominem attack is a regular below-the-belt technique over there.

They also opposed Souter-- another unmarried blank slate nominated by a Bush.

If it makes you feel any better...I just heard some guy on Glen Beck saying she was 'very conservative'...so ...maybe you will like her.

Many FReepers will end up hurling on the image of GWB after this. He's brought it on himself.

We thought he'd learn from his father's mistakes. The SCOTUS is no place for a mistake, not even a hint of a mistake, especially after his diddy gave us Souter.

I was all for Roberts; in fact, I not only had him in my top 2 (along with Luttig), I predicted he'd get at least 70 votes in the Senate. I'm not shying away from any predictions here either. This nominee is going to painfully disappoint the conservatives that got Bush elected on his promise to nominate justices in the mold of Scalia and Thomas.

If he appointed a Luttig type, don't you think Laura would have had him sleeping on the couch?

I think the future of our country is worth a few weeks of sleeping on the couch.

What a horrible pick. Cronyism at its worst!

1988 Al Gore and Lloyd Bensten were more conservative than all current Democrats. Its not like she supported Joe Biden.

He can win the nomination. He COULD win the general if the GOP isn't so damaged by '08 that it resembles the Ohio GOP nationwide. I'm also worried we might lose the House and Senate.

Laura Ingraham just reported on her radio show that Miers donated to Al Gore in 1988 & also donated to Lloyd Bentsen.

I think Ms. Miers nomination to the Supremes is D.O.A.!

"Chuck Shumer "neutral" on Ms Meirs at press conference broadcast on Fox News."

If Harry Reid supports her, and Chuckie is "neutral" - why do we really need to know more?

Why do we think it should be someone WE know?

One should consider how upset the dems are about this.......think about it.

She will NOT be easily derided. If Schumer gets his feathers ruffled.....or even cause him to appear as a deer in headlights.....I am encouraged....

NO RECORD...... As of this day, I consider this in a baseball context as a Bush pitched slider.....another unexpected pitch that leaves the left flailing their bats privately & wildly in the air........GRIN!!!!

Chuck Schumer thinks this looks like a good pick.

I reckon he does.

And, the thing is, he's better positioned than any of us to know the real deal on this nomination.

In a way, you have to give the Democrats credit. Without a majority in either house, and being out of the White House for five years, they're still largely running the show.

Would you say that Miers is as stellar as Luttig?
