Well Bush has personally helped the Constitution party & Libertarians more than he'll ever know. After the trashing of the Constitution by the Republicans in Congress, ALL with Bush's approval and now this - 2 more possible "stealth" Souter and Kennedy's - I'm never voting straight Republican again.

The ONLY positive in this is that at least Kerry isn't naming the nominees, but at this point - who knows! We may end up with the same end result.

I'm SOOOO pissed at Bush right now I could cry. (yes I'm a female) LOL

President Bush has buffaloed the Dems for 6 years.

Seems that many here are overlooking the simple fact that she is councel to the President.....just maybe he knows much more than we do?

I'm troubled by a lot of the stuff on this thread, too; for instance, that she's pro-choice, when I just read this:

I don't claim to know where she stands on abortion.

What I do know, is that she clerked for a liberal judge and donated to Democrats into her 40's. That leads me to question her clarity on the big issues, unless she's undergone some major conversion since then.

She's also 60, when I would've preferred someone a decade younger.

You don't know this womans stand on things yet....you're making assumptions......and calling Bush names based on assumptions. I also worked hard for his re-election and am disappointed in his immigration policies...so I don't think he walks on water. I am just ashamed of the remarks in here ...these: "I'm going to vote for Hillary, Bush Sucks, she's single and old" comments when you DON'T KNOW FOR SURE WHAT SHE STANDS FOR is reckless and stupid! At least wait to be sure on something before you tear him apart....
If she turns out to be liberal, then I'll have the background to be upset and call him names.

Pesky facts.

But she wasn't a POLITICAL APPPOINTEE to the Lottery Commission.

Bush put her on there SPECIFICALLY to clean it up!

"...I earlier wondered if she isn't the legal world's equivalant of Carly Fiorina. Pure speculation on my part, as I know next to nothing about Ms. Miers...."

Brilliant. This may the GMAT anology question of the decade.

Q: Carly Fiorina is to Hewlett-Packard as Harriet Miers is to what?

A. PeopleSoft
B. The Texas State Lottery Commission
C. Atari
D. The Supreme Court of the United States
E. All of the above.

"During Miers' tenure as head of the Texas Bar Association she was a leader in the campaign to reverse the American Bar Association's pro-choice position on the right to choose. Had this campaign been successful, which it was not, the ABA would have been returned to its former position of neutrality."

Selective reading going on here. Somehow this has been posted at least 5 times now, but many choose to ignore.

She seems to be a small-time Texas political operator.

Yep. How depressing. Bush set the bar so high with Roberts that he just crawled underneath it with Miers.

He went from choosing one of the most qualified nominees in history to choosing one of the least.

Does Bush not see that this is probably the straw that has broken the camel's back?
I predict a Democrat sweep in next years races.

Many of us are frustrated. You have the Democrats, who have no members that match our ideology AT ALL. Then you have the Republicans, a good percentage of whom are conservative, but most of the real conservatives have little power due to cronyism and corruption. This is where the "lesser of two evils" argument comes in. What are the alternatives? The Constitition Party? Please! First off I don't even agree with them on everything, and they get about 39 votes nationally every election. The Libertarians? AKA the Constituion Party on Pot...c'mon, they've been around since the '70s and never won a national election, or even come close. Plus I just can't handle their abortion stance or WOT stance. Or gay marriage.

The fact is we feel stuck. We can whine, and not vote for them, and either not vote at all, or vote for third parties with less of a chance of winning than Gary Coleman had in California. We can take up arms and use the 2nd amendment. Or-we can attempt to work from within, and support guys like Mike Pence, Tom Coburn, Ken Blackwell, and even Ron Paul, and get REPUBLICANS who are also CONSERVATIVES to the top of the heap. It can be done and it will be again.

Ms. Miers is known for her pro-life views

Can you give us any facts to back this up? We are sadly short of any detailed information here.

One post says that she has supported Exodus Ministries, which helps homosexuals get psychological counseling to straighten them out. Frankly, that is a hopeful sign, because no one who was politically correct would touch this issue with a ten-foot pole. But I'd like more details to confirm that she is pro-life and can be DEPENDED ON.

Some negatives and positives from Ms Miers' political contributions. The Phil Gramm ones are very positive, IMO.

1988:
$1,000 to Lloyd Bentsen Re-election Committee
$1,000 to Albert Gore Jr. for President Committee
$1,000 to Democratic National Committee
1996:
$500 to Pete Sessions for Congress
$1,000 to Phil Gramm for President
$1,000 to Friends of Phil Gramm
2000:
$1,000 to Kay Bailey Hutchison for Senate Committee
$1,000 to Bush for President
$5,000 to Bush-Cheney 2000 Recount Fund
$1,000 to Bush-Cheney 2000 Compliance Committee
$1,000 to Dallas County Republican Party

Say hello to President Shrillary. The Republicans are in disarray, and this will give the beast the perfect advantage because it drives the biggest wedge into the bedrock of trust conservatives placed in Bush in re-electing him. Bush could have kept it together; instead, he nominates a woman with no personal experience with family and a lifetime of experience appeasing leftists.

I'm about to puke.

One other thing. She has managed a very large and obviously therefore a very ideologically diverse law firm.

This is impressive as a professional credential.

But you don't get positions like that by being a committed conservative or, for that matter, a flaming liberal. That just makes too many people mad.

You succeed in those types of environments by being a pragmatist, a compromiser, a go along to get along.

Again, while that is an impressive professional achievement, it is not exactly what those of us who held out for a Scalia/Thomas wanted.

"Holy crap, someone actually worked Terri Schiavo into this thread.

Cheer up; it took until post 848 for the Schiavo mentions to appear.

I wonder how long it will take before they show up on the ALCS threads in the next few weeks.

In the early 1990s, she led a fight to get the American Bar Association to reverse its pro-abortion rights policy. She lost.

I think the position she advocated was agnostic - she wanted the entirety of the ABA membership to vote on the position, rather than have the ABA leadership develop a position without the support of a membership vote.
