The German Nazis were never able to subjugate the island of Crete in WWII. This film produced by one of Greece's favorite conservative son of immigrants - Alex Spanos - will thrill and move its audiences in retelling the story of this heroism.

Crete marked the last time the Nazis used an airborne assult in WW II. I forget the numbers but I think they lost more than half the force.
The Germans knew that they had been beaten. They were preparing for a final, suicidal offensive when they discovered that the British led force had bugged out of their defensive positions. British/NZ/Australian/Palestinian killed 1751, captured 12254 plus another 5200+ Greeks captured. Allied prisoners totaled about 3 times the number unwounded German fighting men.
One of the German paratroop soldiers was the boxer Max Schmelling.
It's good to have consevatives willing to put up money in ventures like this.

The Germans suffered nearly 4000 killed and missing in the assault.
It was also the first time the Germans had encountered stiff partisan activity, with women and even children getting involved in the battle.
The Cretan Resistance Movement organized during the German occupation continued to inflict heavy casualties on the Nazi forces for four more years after the invasion and set an example for all the conquered people of Europe to follow.
Of course Greeks of Crete suffered savage punitive reprisals for their fighting and resistance and thousands of civilians were randomly executed, while entire communities were burned and destroyed by the Nazi invaders.
It was muslim invasions all over agai this time by the Huns.

the civilians fought with their personal guns and when they had none, they used farm tools. (sharpened edge shovels etc.)
This is an AMAZING movie. Many of the actors are ACTUAL decendents of the Greeks who fought the Nazi's.
They did use airborne assualts afterwards - that's how they rescued Mussolini and snatched a Romanian dictator's son. They were never able to do it on a divisional level again, though.
