Germany's interior minister said Sunday that terrorist organizations such as Hamas should not be allowed to participate in Palestinian elections until they commit to ending attacks against Israel.
"My personal view is that in an election process only decent groups can take part," German Interior Minister Otto Schily said during a visit to Israel. "If it is true that Hamas takes part in terrorist attacks and actions, it is so far impossible to see how they can take part in democratic elections."
Schily arrived in Israel on Wednesday for security talks with Israeli government officials, including Sharon and Vice Prime Minister Shimon Peres.
Schily said there was much Germany could learn from Israel about combating terrorism.
He dared to mention the elephant in the room? I'm shocked.
First, the Washington Compost says Mushie is a liar, and now this?
Well, that sounds positive ...but I'm always skeptical about good news out of Europe.
It's time for a new government in Germany.
"He dared to mention the elephant in the room? I'm shocked."
He did. But he did it while in Israel. Let's see what the German attitude is at home and directly to the Palestinians.
they need to learn to practice what they preach.
OR WHAT?....
Maybe he would stick out his tongue at em'...
Germany in general favors appeasement of terrorism, something which may be called soft-anti-semitism. Given Germany's 20th century history, no politician will openly attack Israel and the Jews. But in Germany, as well as in greater Europe, anti-semitism reveals itself in support of the Palestinian movement. In European cities it is not unusual to overhear conversations regarding the "Israeli Occupation" of Palestine. What does this have to do with German Interior Minister Otto Schily? Notice the equivocation of his statement, "If it is true that Hamas takes part in terrorist attacks and actions". That Hamas is a terrorist organization has been an established fact for many years. Thus, this qualification is the truly elucidating part of the ministers statement. In this light, how serious of a stand can Germany actually be taking?
No, he will be very angry at them, and write them a sternly worded letter, telling them just how angry he is.
Well, maybe 'angry' is too strong a word. Upset? Concerned?
Send a brigade to the Gaza border to police it, shooting anyone who tries to attack across it. Then you can talk about what you require of Hamas. Or cut off all the money you keep paying them. Then you can at least make suggestions.
You guys missed the disclaimer. The Germans haven't seen enough 'proof' yet. No action needed. Go back to sleep Europe.
Yeah. I'm sure that's going to happen.
