Saturday, October 01, 2005 - The Danish Air Force has paid 30,000 krones (about $4,800) in damages to a local Santa Claus after its F-16s scared his only reindeer to death, Danish television reported Friday.
The incident occurred in February at the farm of Olavi Niikanoff, who fulfils traditional Christmas time work as a local Santa Claus. Niikanoff said his reindeer, Rudolph, was quietly grazing when two F-16s appeared out of nowhere and roared over the terrified animal.
The reindeer died on the spot from a heart attack, a veterinarian said.
The farmer demanded compensation from the Air Force. After checking the timetable of the flights and studying the veterinarian's conclusions, the military acknowledged they were to blame for the animal's untimely demise and agreed.
The Danish Air Force acknowledges their fault and therefore paid a compensation. They regularly paid out sums of money to compensate for animals that die of fright when planes boom overhead.
in indianapolis a few weeks ago some lady claimed that the Blue Angels were flying overhead and one of her dogs died of a heart attack because of it... she wanted money or the Indpls air show to be cancelled ... sounds a bit too familiar

Yep. It probably costs more than $4,800 to have a lawyer look into the matter, so they probably just threw the guy a check to make the whole thing go away. I don't like it but it was a smart move on his part. If he had sued the AF for a kazillion dollars, like a lot of them do, the govt. will fight it tooth-and-nail. If the case has a reasonable chance of going to court and they can settle for a few grand, the govt. usually will.
Rudolf the dead, dead raindeer...
Darn! I was expecting it might have been from a missile attack or at least some sort of in-flight incident. How disappointing.
LOL! Who are you? Gomez Addams?
