Misinformation about Alaska abounds
Voice of the Anchorage Times ^ | 10-01-05 | By Lew M. Williams Jr.

Alaska can help finance the recovery from recent hurricanes. It also can secure an energy supply and generate future revenue, thus avoiding tax increases.

But first, Americans have to get the facts straight about Alaska. The misinformation is atrocious. For example, Steve Doocy of Fox and Friends reported Tuesday that the 2005 highway legislation appropriated $223 million for a bridge (at Ketchikan) to serve 50 people, or about $4.5 million per person. That is ridiculous and exhibits the sloppy reporting costing major media their viewers and readers.

The bridge would replace an expensive and inadequate shuttle ferry to a regional airport used by civilian and military aircraft. Ketchikan lies at the south end of the 500-mile-long Alaska Panhandle. The only roads into the Panhandle are at the extreme north end. Ketchikan's closest access to the continental highway system entails a six-hour ferry ride to Prince Rupert, British Columbia, plus a two-day drive to the nearest state.

Hi RightWhale! I was just thinking about "pinging" you. I think I'll just grab a soda, maybe a couple pieces of moose jerky, and sit back and watch the show. LOL

Aw common, you are now making a case for a different standard for Alaska than every other state; mineral rights in any other state are the state's. Are you suggesting that the oil in Alaska should be the property of the Federal Government like it is in, er, RUSSIA?

No wonder you are so familiar with the "dribbling of Stalinists!" Takes one to know one, right?

The people of Alaska partied with oil royalty money, and deserve scorn for their actions.

You are TOO FUNNY! ROFL! Oh yes, that's what Alaskans do.....we get our permanent fund checks and just go on a wild drunk. Your ignorance is showing. Oh, sorry to interrupt your rant....please, please do continue. LOL

Do you have a source for this claim? The US census data shows continued growth

This U.S. Census Bureau page shows the decline for the Ketchikan Borough (think county)that contains ALL area users of the proposed bridge.

Right on. The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 gave the Alaska Natives land before state entitlements were even selected. Tribal Americans were placed into a corporate structure with 12, then 13 Regional Corporations. There are adjoining non-profit corporations, and some 200 village corporations. That was what it took to get the pipeline built over the efforts of obstructionist environmentalists.

The Alaska Permanent Fund is a natural antithesis to the massive ANSCA settlement; revenues going to State government are invested in trust for future Alaskans rather than pissed away. The federal government has been our big daddy for a long time and with development of natural resources we are finally finding a way to appropriately develop this wonderful part of the world. It is expected that a lot of knee-jerk Outsiders wouldn't have a clue about why we have created an innovative approach to provide basic services for so few people spread over so many miles.

Party means have an enjoyable time. If it means going on a wild drunk to you, then party on down.

Your ignorance is showing.

Rather that than my welfare dependency.

Tell me what did you actually do, other than take the trouble to be born, to deserve a government hand out?

Since English is/was my second language, i always get ticked off when I read some of the poor english perpetrated at us.
"Could of", "Would of", are just incorrect, not even bad english. It should be Could have (Could've, Would have, Would've is acceptable)
Sorry to be picky, but especially teen agers are beginning to utilize those phrases and it irks me to no end.

Once again you demonstrate pure ignorance; the federal govenment doesn't just sell it's land to anybody who has the funds to buy it--even if it is a state govenrment.

Alaska still hasn't gotten all of it's entitlement under the Statehood Act.

You obviously have not had much to do with the federal government to make such ignorant statements. Everything takes TIME...AND MORE TIME...AND MORE TIME...when dealing with the federal government.

That's why Alaska worked so hard to become a state--so we didn't have to wait for federal decisions on basic needs.

I stand corrected. I thought your definition of "party", meant "party".

You are obviously quite upset about the Permanent Fund. What can I say? Sorry. I'm sure if you were to move to Alaska you would refuse to take part in our "welfare dependency". For you to call it that (welfare dependency) once again shows your bias and obvious contempt for Alaskans.

Why don't you read up on the history of the Alaska, the pipeline and the "Permanent Fund"? I don't have the time, nor the inclination to educate you myself.

Other than that, you have a nice day. :)

What you seem to imply is that the State of Alaska has some kind of obligation to do more than the Federal Government is required to do regarding navigation on national waterways. That is rediculas at its face.

Ridiculous if you want the hand out that is. You sound like the Mayor of NO complaining that Bush did not remind him to use his school buses. The State failed to assure the navigational systems were state of the art. Sure you can blame the Feds, and the drunk, but the point is the State had resources to assure the system was as good as possible, but decided not to be bothered. If it was important to the state they would of made it a priority. Great Lake States set more protections on the lakes than the Feds do, and constantly push for more. Just like Texas some folks can find the school buses.

"Misinformation about Alaska abounds"I have it on good authority that not one penguin was killed nor had it's habitat destroyed during any oil exploration effort in Alaska.

I love telling environmentalists that fact.

Doesn't it make more sense to say "They would HAVE made it a priority"?

I have taught Alaska History at the high school level in the Anchorage School District, and I'm not sure someone who has made such ignorant statements cares about the facts. To be educated a person must have an open mind.

Posting this article has brought out the kind of people who jump to conclusions without a clue...about Alaska!
