Gun law critics fear state will become O.K. Corral
Sarasota Herald-Tribune ^ | 10/2/05 | Latisha Gray

Joe Brower says everyday life is like "Wild Kingdom." It's survival of the fittest. And in his world, criminals don't attack people with guns; people with guns are the strong ones.

If some criminal mistakes him for prey, as of today, a new law gives him the right to shoot with the gun he keeps at his side.

"A lion out in Africa doesn't go for the strongest zebra," said Brower, a 44-year-old software engineer. "It goes for the weakest. Human predators do the exact same thing. If you are armed, that makes you stronger."

The "Stand Your Ground" law says instead of running, people who fear for their lives have the right to defend themselves -- no matter where they are.

Gun owners like Brower say the new law will make criminals think twice before they attack. But others who feel uneasy about the legislation say it could turn Florida into the Wild West.

One national group, The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, is warning tourists to stay away from Florida for their own safety. Visitors to the state get wide-eyed when they hear about the new law.

>> I'm betting nothing will change after today. <<

One thing will change - the violent crime rate will drop.

In the last few years the situation was opened to allow concealed carry by anyone over 18, without classes or background check. I frankly feel a bit uneasy about such indiscriminate access. There are bad guys and irresponsible guys out there, after all. But sill no OK Corral.

That is because the bad and/or irresponsible folks were already going armed, regardless of the law. Like all gun control, the previous law only affected the law abiding. Since no new bad guys were added to the mix, and lots of good guys and gals were, no blood running in the streets, except maybe a little more from bad guys when they do something stupid, like attacking a now armed good gal or guy.

Considering that officers don't get sent until the dispatcher gives them the info.

Well the pizza guy has to wait to get the information as well, plus he is tied to a fixed location to the get the pizza, which he has to wait to be cooked. Of course those fixed location are much closer together than the average separation of patrol cars, and are sited to serve a reasonably compact area in most cases. The police try to do the same, putting more cars in high crime areas, but that means that when a crime occurs in a lower crime rate area, they aren't likely to be anywhere nearby.

Check out my post 117. Can't argue with your points, which are, should I say, 'on target?' Having lived through several teenagers of my own, who are now talented and remarkable people in their own right, individuals in the 18-22 year old age bracket often get their gears in motion before their brain in engaged. So I worry. Just a little.

You're right of course. I chat with Eaker often so I figured he knew what I was getting at.

I was thinking more along the lines that pizza orders go out in the order they get them. Police dispatchers on the other hand, will also have to hold low priority calls depending on how busy a given period of time may be. Of course I could go on about how liberal courts and politicians have made a mess of society, (to include the quality of police officers,) which correlates directly to why police chase their tails going call to call. The day I don't hear "wtf took so long?" is just around the corner. 8>) The safe move is to just order a pizza until the libs screw that up to. I love FR. Never in my life did I expect to be comparing police and pizza. Damn it. Now it's time to go to work and I'm in the mood for Dominoes.

Yep, never EVER talk to a reporter without a tape recorder running. NEVER.

The reason reporters (like FBI agents) always use notepads instead of recorders is simple: it allows them to twist, embellish and even make up your words, and then claim it represented their "best recollection" of what was said.

Honest reporters are more rare than virgins in whore houses.

Well you know a presstitute makes their money screwing people .....:o)

Richard MacEntee, 67, said people have nothing to worry about if they aren't doing anything wrong. The Ellenton resident shoots between 300 and 400 rounds a day and has been around guns since he was 9 years old.

I guess I'll have to slow down to 300-400 rounds a day when I retire too.....< /sarcasm>

Stay safe Joe....BTW she called you because of your stuff here at FR or local RKBA efforts , word of mouth , were ya just at the range ?????

If ya have time I'd be interested as to how these folks picked ya'll for their article....

"BTW she called you because of your stuff here at FR or local RKBA efforts , word of mouth , were ya just at the range ?????"

Good question. While it's a certainty that the so-called "news" office of this fishwrap has its Rolodex full of contacts for the anti-gunners, it was quite plain that this reporterette was severely at a loss looking for the pro-gun side of the equation.

Despite the several letters I've had published in this very same paper, and despite the fact that I even had a guest op-ed printed tbere, and despite the fact that I've had several "discussions" with some higher ups at this propaganda outlet... ! It turned out that she got my name from her boss, David Hackett, who is editor of the Venice edition, who's the father of a boy that my son has been very good friends with since Kindergarten. DH knew that I was everything that the denizens of the SHT's offices were not (with a few notable exceptions, right hemogoblin? $;-), and he gave her my name right off the bat.

The rest is history. Oh look -- there it goes -- my 15 minutes of fame are now up! $;-)
