New Orleans Opened for More Residents

NEW ORLEANS — More New Orleans returnees have come into the city as additional sections of town were formally opened. But plenty of them say they're not back to stay.

While loading paintings into his car, Paul Kernan said his friends are gone, people are relocating and he considers himself a former resident. Kernan says maybe "the new New Orleans" will be a good place, but he won't be taking part in it.

Reagan Schmidt says she'll be back from Baton Rouge, but probably not permanently.

A few blocks away, Allison Nunley cleared out her apartment because her landlord needs to use it as a replacement for his damaged office. In addition, Nunley says she's found work in Houston and the double-whammy of Katrina and Rita has made her an ex-resident of New Orleans.

KEYWORDS: hurricaine; katrina; nagin; politicians; thieves
My favorite line:

"New Orleans is not asking for a handout; we're asking for a hand up," Nagin said. The Louisiana congressional delegation has called for $250 billion in federal aid to help the state recover from hurricane damage.

Holy greedy politicians, Batman! That is enough for about $350,000 for every man, woman and child that was affected by Katrina! Sounds an awful lot like the politicians of LA smell money in the air and are looking to steal as much as they can.

Nagin is asking for a flat gimmie. He needs the cash to get his constituency to return. As is, a lot have found greener pastures and aren't coming back. What better incentive can you find than cash. By the figures there is plenty of that to go around.

Taylor Livingston, 40, was using a leaf-blower, hoping to create a lived-in look at three homes he was guarding against looters.

Why would anyone want to go back to that? Imagine living in that corrupt dirty environment.

Nagin must be in panic mode. It appears that the majority of New Orleans residents returning so far are the white ones. Citizens of color seem to be abandoning the mess and going elsewhere to start new lives. This has to be bad news for Nagin's reelection campaign.

Before they can come back, they have to swear an oath to Farrakhan.

My son went with his half sister to see if there is anything left of her home....They took a large truck with supplies for friends who already knew what they needed. Another friend has been "evicted" from their house. The land lord discovered he could make MORE money through FEMA.
SO they are going to have to move that family. Where they don't know yet.

Makes me wonder if what the landlord's eviction is legal.....ITOH maybe it is in LA.

Got to agree with you. I cannot believe the gall of this lying SOB. No one should give this corrupt piece of crap one thin dime. How many times does Nagin think he can bulls**t people and get caught and still have his hand out? IMPEACH HIM. Replace him with someone competent and then worry about rebuilding and/or whatever they plan to do.

That is so funny that the webcams are back. My husband and I have lived in New Orleans for 4 years and the Howlin' Wolf webcam is one of our favs! We check in about this time every Friday for a GOOD laugh! At this time on a Friday you see REALLY drunk people performing Kareoki and looking like complete fools!

On a serious note...I really miss my home/life. I am getting so depressed. My husband and I have a single suitcase between us......I hate Nagin.
