Owen is out Sep 30 2005 12:42 PM
By TimChapman
According to a very reliable source close to the White House vetting process for the next nominee, Priscilla Owen has withdrawn her name from the process.
With Owen out, conservatives have lost one of the better women on the short list.
I haven't read the newsletter but I can imagine how it would work. The more the base gets turned off, the more traction the left's constant attacks get. There's nothing to counterbalance it. Maybe that's why Bush apologized after NO got hit. The base isn't defending him. That's why the numbers continue to sink (unless it's polling fraud on an unprecedented scale). The numbers will likely turn around next year for the election, but how much will they stick to the candidates? Will they turn around enough? How much MORE damage will the Pres. do to himself and the party with his pandering to every Group that screeches loud enough, or threatens loud enough? He claims to not care about polls or the media, but he sure does dance to their tune. Except when the base complains. He's good at turning a deaf ear to us.
So if he comes out with a lukewarm nominee, watch the rats cheer for a day, and watch the polls continue to ebb away. He could get lower than Carter at this rate.
Nicknamed "Scalito" for views resembling those of conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, Samuel Alito Jr. is a favorite son of the political right. Appointed in 1990 by George H.W. Bush to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, Alito has earned a reputation for intellectual rigor and polite but frequent dissent in a court that has been historically liberal. His mettle, as well as a personable demeanor and ties to former Republican administrations, has long had observers buzzing about his potential rise to the high court. "Sam Alito is in my mind the strongest candidate on the list," says Pepperdine law Prof. Douglas Kmiec. "I know them all . . . but I think Sam is a standout because he's a judge's judge. He approaches cases with impartiality and open-mindedness." ...
Lustberg says. "I don't agree with him on many issues, but I have the utmost respect for him. No one can question his intelligence or integrity."
This man sounds like a Roberts!!!!
My money is on Alice Batchelder..
michigan conservative? almost sounds like an oxymoron.
The reference to "Terri's Law" is to the Florida version ...
One exception was when he voted with all his colleagues in 2004 to declare Terri's Law -- the measure championed by Gov. Bush to reinsert Terri Schiavo's feeding and hydration tubes -- unconstitutional on the grounds that it violated the constitutional separation of powers.
And they will be joined by the "conservatives" here who will wail that whoever he nominates IS Streisand.
who?
This is the problem. It's not who "Bush wants," but who wants the job badly enough to have his or her reputation slimed for the rest of their days.
Actually, most of those polling units were wrong last election day so their credibility is in doubt. RASS was dead on and on average has had him at 45-48% consistently.
Currently, last I checked, they had him at 45%.
FOX was a consistent and accurate predictor last year, only usually about 2% lower than what the real result will be. Currently they have him at 45%.
Gallop infamously gave the race to Kerry last year, so I'm not a fan of them, but currently he has gone from 41% back up to 45%.
So, even in a poll I do not trust, his ratings have been rebounding.
You are correct that the base's opinion is all that matters. The base holds steady, his effectiveness holds steady. And given state races are largely base turnouts that define who the winner will be, if the base is motivated to turnout by the President we win the majority of contests given most are or lean conservative/Republican.
I do discount your contention the base isn't defending him. It's all we've been doing since, at least, Katrina and the ludicrous assaults on his heads.
How often do you beat your wife?
Actually, I can't decide about the Owens issue and what Bush will or will not do. I guess I'll just have to wait, hope, and pray, that he picks a candidate with solid conservative credentials - just like all of us.
Having been disappointed with Souter, Kennedy and O'Connor, you can't blame conservatives for being uptight nad gunshy about this subject.
He would be an excellent pick...
I would and I'd stand up to that old panel of stuffed shirts and give back as good as they gave me. It's time the one sitting in the hot seat returns some of the vitriol directed at them. Question yes. Badger no. Give their nasty opinions? No.

What percentage of the those people who President Bush has nominated so far in her term have you found unacceptable? It must be over half.
IMHO Bush might as well appoint the conservative he wants, because no matter who he appoints, unless its a Dem or RINO, they will be vilified and filibustered.
Whoever gets the nod should require the judiciary to "limit their questions to strict constitutional ones"...after all, Judith Miller and Gov. Blanco went before the senate with their "requirements"!
No I don't, I'm just looking for a little entertainment on a slow Friday afternoon. I figure I'm as reliable a source as any!
Just for the record, I know the President is male. My only defense is that I was attempting to pose the question as a housecat was welcoming me home from work by getting between me and the monitor.
Cat has been now chucked from the room.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Oops. Thought you were using the slang in some odd way. :)
