Teen With Camcorder Captures His Own Killing On Tape

LA CROSSE, Wis. -- Friends and relatives have said their final goodbyes to Wisconsin high school senior Seth Hammes.

Hammes, 17, was out using his camcorder as he explored the woods near Little Falls, Wis., last Saturday when the camera ended up recording his own fatal shooting.

After searchers found his body that night, investigators ran the videotape, which had captured the crack of gunshots, the teen's screams and the voice of the shooter, promising help that never came.

Police said the camcorder was the key to catching the man now charged with reckless homicide, 24-year-old Russell Schroeder. He told police he thought he saw an animal when he fired the shots, and he didn't call for help after seeing Hammes because he feared he would get in trouble.

The funeral service for Hammes was held Thursday.

His uncle, Ed Hammes, described his nephew as a gentle giant, who stood over six feet tall and wore size 17 shoes. He said the teen liked to tinker with the family's lawn mowers and research fireworks, but mostly he was someone who would go out of his way to help another.

Schroeder was being held on $250,000 bond. If convicted, he faces up to 85 years in prison.

"I've never seen this pain and terror you suggest."

I have. And I haven't done as much hunting as you have. Maybe you should take a look.

Do you think the deer that is exhausted from the chase of the dogs is not terrified?

What about the animal who is not killed instantly? Do you think it doesn't feel pain and fear?

I have seen people enjoy watching dogs kill a raccoon.

If you enjoy it, do it. I'm not trying to stop you.

However, if you think the animals don't experience pain and terror, you are kidding yourself.

No, I haven't, and perhaps you're right, but I still cannot understand how anyone could derive pleasure from inflicting pain and terror.

We don't. We derive pleasure from harvesting game. A conscientious hunter's goal is to do that with as little pain and terror as possible.

The process itself is primal, and intrinsically validating for one who is unashamed of masculinity. To bring home the venison is akin to bringing home the bacon; it says to you "Yes, you have what it takes." It's affirming.

That said, it's not for everyone.

as a gentle giant, who stood over six feet tall and wore size 17 shoes.....do you think this hunter thought he saw a bigfoot? There are people that would love to capture or kill one to prove it's real and what kind of animal did this guy think he was hunting and did he have a permit just to go shoot any animal.

Yes, they're terribly stylish and they keep your ears warm, but you should never wear these out in the woods this time of year.

No, I am a vegetarian and not a hypocrit. I merely appreciated my friend's kind gesture and hospitality, and I cherished the respect and affection that I have for her, more than I wanted to avoid eating the venison.

It was one of the many choices that we all make every day.

Incidentally, this friend is a raving Leftist and Democrat who campaigned for Kerry and adores Bill and Hillary Clinton. I also did not attack her political positions--though I have discussed these things with her many times and consider them utterly harebrained, and she knows it. Being a Leftist and a carnivore are only some of her qualities; she has many more that I value, cherish, admire, and respect.

This no more makes me a Leftist/Democrat and hypocrit, than my accepting her gift of venison makes me a carnivore and hypocrit did.

Don't know what state you live in, but hunting deer with dogs is illegal here.

"How does a big like like this get confused for an animal? Prayers up for this family....."

We have that problem here in the mountains of the Carolinas. Many hunters are out to kill whatever. And often they are caught hunting in areas they have no busines in. Sadly due to these idiots we curtail hiking in the fall due to stupid hunters. Last year on my own land a shot rang out and heard the round go through the trees.

"THOUGHT he saw an animal? Idiot with a gun."

That's why I NEVER hunt with brush shooters during deer season (if the brush moves they shoot).

No, it's not for everyone, and if you enjoy it you should do it.

However, anyone who is unashamed of masculinity--and who is comfortable with himself and loves being a man, as I am and as I do--needs no validation or affirmation. He is himself his own validation and affirmation and his own standard of masculinity.

And, furthermore, the infliction of pain and fear--and, for that matter, hunting--is not intrinsic to masculinity.

And many of us men, who are unashamed of masculinity and in fact revel in it, are completely comfortable in setting our own standards and, already knowing that we have what it takes, need no further affirmation.

From what you have said, I infer that you also fall into this category. You set your own standards of what masculinity means and love your own masculinity and all that it means to be a man--as I do--so you do not need validation or affirmation. You are--as I am--your own affirmation and validation. Whether you hunt or not has nothing to do with it.

"10 + years at least. Just my opinion."

Since not calling guaranteed the death of the victim, can anyone explain how a deliberate act (the decision not to call for help) causing death isn't first degree murder?

Hunting deer with dogs may be illegal here too; I don't know. It's been a long time. My relatives do, however, have a garden, to attract the deer, and a nearby blind, from which they shoot them when they come to feed. I don't see anything sporting about that.

Furthermore, I have deer on my property. I think they're beautiful. I don't feed them because I don't want them to loose their fear of humans, but I really love to watch them.

Your story doesn't sound right, Gondring. New York, like virtually every state in the union, requires hunters to undergo a Hunter Education and Safety Course before they can obtain a license, even a one-day permit.

In fact, most states require both a written test and a field test with a firearm. Among other subjects, the written test covers the type of game that can be harvested, as well as optimal shot placement on whitetail deer.

Now I'm not saying you're untruthful, Gondring, and goodness knows there are plenty of morons who hunt, just like there are morons who drive. All I'm saying is the folks in your story obviously did not pass Hunters Ed if they could not distinguish between a deer and a goat, and could not work the actions on their firearms. They were not legal hunters under New York law, and I don't know how such people could legally obtain a one-day permit. Did I miss something?

"Do you think the deer that is exhausted from the chase of the dogs is not terrified?"

Deer have died under the claws and teeth of perdators ever since they evolved.

Those who don't like the way the natural world operates have two options, complain to God or complain to "evolution".

As of the time of this post, neither was returning calls.

The food chain exists. Learn to live with it. Try to stay on the top of it.

perdators = predators , when typed correctly, that is.

Amen to that. But sometimes those pickup trucks are good targets.

I was hunting in the woods near my parents house in NC about 20 yrs ago, wearing blaze orange hat, vest, and trousers because it was deer season, when I heard some dogs behind me. I was near the road so I started toward it staying in pretty good view of the road. All of a sudden some idiots in a truck on the side of the road start lobbing lead into the woods right past me. I dropped to the ground yelling (I wasn't hit) and they kept shooting. So I started shooting back. I got a couple tires, but they got out of there quick.

I got their tag number through my scope and reported it to the sherrif, but never heard any more about it. I hope they learned their lesson, but I doubt it.

Hunting with dogs is not hunting. The only skill you need is the ability to fire a weapon.
