Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s California Recovery Team
opinion | 9-29-2005 | brianbaldwin

Today I received a solicitation letter raising money for California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s (R-CA) California Recovery Team. A donation enrolls membership to the California Recovery Team, and money donated no doubt helps to support the Governor’s reform propositions, YES on 73 which states parents must have the right to be notified (parent notification) of his/her 13 year old child seeking an abortion, YES on 74 which requires new teachers to work successfully for five years before they get tenure and a virtual job for life, YES on 75 which require big government employee unions to get permission before they can take money out of a worker’s paycheck for political purposes, YES on 76 to control state spending by preventing allowance of state expenditures to grow faster than revenues, YES on 77 which changes how California draws election districts by taking it out of the hands of politicians to draw their own districts and instead draw a panel of independent retired judges to formulate fair districting.

Today I proudly joined this California Recovery Team, and I hope that my donation will go towards supporting Arnold’s reforms, which will be on the November ballot. I hope Californians join Arnold, and donate as well, and I would invite you to read the following from Arnold Schwarzenegger which inspired me and would convince anyone who loves America that this Governor is one of the giants of our time, a Ronald Reagan of our time – he is brave and he doesn’t care about polls. Polls are for sissy men. Read these words, and tell me if Arnold isn’t on our side? Arnold proudly declares the following achievements, each of which was a bulleted item on the first page of his letter, each of which is a complete statement of it’s own standing:

”We repealed the unfair and illegal tripling of the car tax that penalized hard working Californians for the mistakes of politicians.”

”We repealed the law which gave driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.”

”We reformed the job-killing workers’ compensation system by passing historic legislation that will fight fraud, save businesses billions of dollars and protect injured workers.”

”We passed a tough spending limit and cut up the state’s credit card so that the politicians can never again spend us into bankruptcy.”

”We passed two state budgets with no tax increases, just as I promised.”

”We defeated a number of special interest ballot initiatives that would have raised taxes, hurt businesses, watered down the THREE STRIKES LAW and undercut my ability to control the growth of gambling throughout California.”

There was only one mistake in his words, above. The words “can never again”. Because, of course, if the Democrats, a left wing Democrat, again takes over the State – such a fool certainly CAN and WILL find a way to spend us into bankruptcy. Arnold went on to admit that actually it wasn’t him as much as it was the grass roots of the State that drove these achievements, and only grass roots efforts such as the idea behind the California Recovery Team can bring even more achievements and reforms to this state which is majority Democrat and in part insane. But this state can be turned around, and yes a Republican, such as Arnold, can win in this state and don’t you believe the polls, Arnold will win again in this State.

If you would like to help, then please do. You know you will feel good, feel great, if and when you JOIN ARNOLD.

Here is an address for you: California Recovery Team, 455 Capitol Mall, Suite 801, Sacramento, CA 95814.

Don’t you kid yourself about righteous indignation about money politics. Money is the power, and in numbers the grass roots can put together enough money to make the difference even against the special interests and all of their power and money. So, if you want to fight, you can fight by giving some of your money to such efforts. Yes, give to the other good organizations as well. You can’t give everything, but give some. And give to this good effort, as well.

I remember giving and giving to Ronald Reagan. He became Governor of California. He went on to much more in politics. Each step I gave money. Sometimes a little, sometimes more. But, now I look back, and I fondly remember that I gave. I keep some mementos of those days. Don’t be surprised, if you give today, one day in the future you will look back, and remember fondly, that you gave to Join Arnold. One day came around, I finally met Ronald Reagan. Maybe one day you will met Arnold. Don’t think your little donation doesn’t make a difference. You are the ones who make a difference. You may not have the voice, but it is people like Arnold who have the voice for you. And it is the power of the human voice that moves history. The written word is powerful. Just look at the Bible. But the power of the human voice, it is indeed something. The human voice will go everywhere, far. Just look at what Talk Radio has done for our Nation. The human voice can be the most dangerous weapon of mass destruction. But the power of the human voice can also change history for the better. A voice like a Rudy, or an Arnold, or Tancredo, or a Savage, or Ronald, or on and on. Choose who you want to be the human voice, choose the best ones. Then put your money behind the human voice. This is how you win.

Go Arnold! I don't need to read about his accomplishments. I can tell he's doing right by how mad the usual suspects are. I like that he's making them spend all their money trying to defeat him and the propositions he's sponsoring

"I don't need to read about his accomplishments."

I agree.

---

Instead..

How about ..

-- The borrowed money of ours via Prop 57 he is spending to keep those same 'usual suspects' heads above water, even as state revenue income has increased (but still never seems to be enough)...
or
-- The pending bond proposals for even more borrowed monies for levees and infrastructure that will be hitting the ballot in ensuing elections, amounts will likely exceed 10-20 billion ...
or
-- The ~10% increases in the state budget the last 2 years, budgets submitted by the Gubinor to the legislature...
or
-- The doubling of the state's long-term debt load (Now in the mid- to high 40B's) to keep the state solvent and let the c'Rats off the hook, all in the spiritof "bipartisanship" ...
or
-- The looming energy crisis that we dance on the hairy edge of daily while more money is pumped into GReen renewable energy while oil reserves lie offshore untapped ...
or
-- The continued hiring of state employees above previous levels.

Heck, you're right!

Who needs to read about the accomplishments is right.

Pass the Maalox.

I am incredibly conflicted here, as I am with many Republican votes lately.

I voted for Schwarzenegger, I voted for Bush, I voted for Christopher Cox when he last ran here (CA), and many more but I am peeked on the denigration from all these offices over an issue I've sought assistance with as a constituent.

They never hesistate to contact me for money, for help with emails, for VOTES, and yet the last call to Schwarzenegger's office got a hideously ill-mannered person ("Julie" no last name, wouldn't provide it, no supervisor, wouldn't provide it, "doesn't care" if she loses my vote for Schwarzenegger, "doesn't care" that I voted for him, "doesn't care" if I reconsider my voting in the upcoming election, "doesn't care" if Schwarzenegger is re-elected and "doesn't care" what my issue is...and this person works IN THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE) pretty much reducing my good faith as a human being in public employees to dust.

And then we get these things in the mail.

I realize the alternatives to ongoing votes for Republicans spells doom on so many issues and fronts, BUT if Republicans cannot learn to respect the -- literally -- hands that feed them, they can learn to by other means and that just might mean by not getting elected.

Schwarzenegger was elected by a mere minorit in the state (a minority within the entire voting population in the state) and SOME of his decisions in office have been very much appreciated by me, but the insulting (and mysteriously destructive, discouraging) behavior by Schwarzenegger's Governor's office the other day was preposterously insulting. As was Cox's letter, as was, as was...

It's just a case of Democrats doing greedy, reckless things but our Republicans lately doing irreconciliable acts after election that make voting for them again a great big further compromise: I'm damned if I don't, I'm damned if I do.

What will it take to employ in public offices people who are polite, reasonable, respectful toward constituents and at least identify themselves for future follow-up? If I want to be denigrated over the phone, I can call PINK. I just never expect this sort of horrid behavior by anyone among conservatives, least of the office of the Governor of CA. And my call followed a two-page courteous and kind and complimentary letter which followed my courteous and kind and complimentary vote.

Sometimes political parties need to lose to get the point.

Your numbers are WAY too low. You must think BIG!

Reform, rebuild ... repay - Schwarzenegger's vision involves trips to the bank

(snip)

How is this vision -- more spending with less money -- going to work?

I put that question to Finance Director Tom Campbell this week.

His answer was direct: The money will come from borrowing -- not just money for bridges and roads, but also money for school programs and other services.

It's no secret, Campbell said, that an infrastructure bond will soon be in the offing and it will not be modest.

Schwarzenegger, he said, has told his advisers that they shouldn't blink at talk of a $9 billion or $10 billion bond when "we should be talking about $60 billion or $70 billion."

All that's needed to launch California into a bold new era of borrow and build, Campbell said, is to first get the annual operating budget under control.
