WASHINGTON, Sept. 28 - President Bush is close to naming a successor to Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and could announce his choice this week, Republicans close to the White House said Wednesday.

One name that was the source of enormous speculation in Washington legal and political circles was Harriet E. Miers, the White House counsel, who is a leader in the search for Justice O'Connor's successor. Ms. Miers, 60, was the first woman to become a partner at a major Texas law firm and the first woman to be president of the State Bar of Texas. At one point, Ms. Miers was Mr. Bush's personal lawyer.

Between 1988 and 1994 she became a Republican. So what. I know a lot of Republicans who were once Conservative Southern Democrats. And so do you.

The way it was originally articulated on this thread was that she gave money to Gore in 2000. In 1988 he didn't even make it to the nomination.

I am hoping for Brown or Clement (Tulane Law grad). Brown has outstanding credentials and is fairly conservative.

There you go...thank you....

that makes me think she is just a red herring for the Dems to fawn over before he sticks them with Luttig or JRB....

I wonder if she had a change of heart or if she noticed that she could advance further with the Republicans?

It won't happen, someone in the WH leaked her name to the media to keep them off guard. I personally hope Bush nominates Emilio Garza.

If the New York Times says it'll be someone, it's a good bet that person is about the last one on earth to be considered.

Harriet E. Miers is not a conservative.

Why do you think the Slimes is floating her name? No one in the Bush administration will even give them the correct time of day. This is just more far left wishful thinking posing as "news."

I think he almost has to fill this with a woman. I'd turn backflips to see Janice Brown or even Priscilla Owen nominated. I don't think it's going to happen. I mentioned another name in the other thread on this, who fits the bill of (a.) being a woman and (b.) being a Hispanic, and IMHO Bush would love a Hispanic on the court which, along with personal loyalty, is the reason why IMHO in his heart of hearts he wants Gonzales but that's a non-starter ... that would be Consuelo Callahan of the Ninth Circuit, who the president appointed in 2003. She's also only 52.

I have to wonder if it is to rattle Bush over the next SCOTUS nominee. After all, THIS is their last line of defense. They cannot afford to have a young, conservative justice make it to the bench. Put the squeeze on DeLay to throw the Administration into PR mode and to try to show them that you will go after the party leadership, even with lies, to destroy them.
======
That would be exactly the wrong thing for the Dems to do, imho. I think President Bush will choose the person he thinks is best for the country regardless of attempted outside influences. However, I think a tactic like that would make him more, rather than less inclined to make the "Right" choice.
