Bush Reported Near to Nominating Judge (Reported this past Friday)

WASHINGTON, Sept. 28 - President Bush is close to naming a successor to Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and could announce his choice this week, Republicans close to the White House said Wednesday.

One name that was the source of enormous speculation in Washington legal and political circles was Harriet E. Miers, the White House counsel, who is a leader in the search for Justice O'Connor's successor. Ms. Miers, 60, was the first woman to become a partner at a major Texas law firm and the first woman to be president of the State Bar of Texas. At one point, Ms. Miers was Mr. Bush's personal lawyer.

Oh that's for sure, but... the only thing we know about Miers is that she is a friend of Bush family and that there are virtually no paper trail linking her to controversial issues.

While I am sure she is a fine judge if a friend of the president she will not be nominated. It is absurd that Freepers would take the NY Times seriously on these matters in any case.

Anyone else think the DeLay indictment timing is suspect?

Absolutely. Ronnie Earle is the biggest hack in Texas and is known for using his political agenda to prosecute people. Not only did he indict Kay Bailey Hutchison within days after she won her Senate seat (the first occupied by a Republican since the Civil War), but he also "investigated" or indicted Democrats who managed to get on his wrong side, like Gib Lewis, who once ran against Earle for office, and Bob Bullock, the Democrat political mentor of President Bush.

Bullock is also a close friend of Robin Rather -- the daughter of Dan Rather.

On Wednesday, Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic leader, and Senator Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, sent Mr. Bush a letter urging him not to name to the court any of the three judges who were part of the compromise - Judge William J. Pryor Jr. and Judges Owen and Brown.

"The nomination of any of these individuals to the Supreme Court would represent an unnecessary provocation and would be met by substantial opposition in the Senate," the letter said.

God these people piss me off.

It's going to be Luttig. Bush never telegraphs his punch.

I couldn't agree more. I have some ideas why Luttig or someone of that mold will be nominated.

I think Bush understands his dad's legacy ( which is mixed with Souter and Thomas). He also knows that he has a chance to make a difference for many years beyond his administration.

Secondly, why would Bush nominate someone to replace SDO who is not going to back up his recently confirmed CJ? I have to believe that he would not put someone at that level (Chief Justice) only to have them shoot blanks by constantly being a part of the dissenting opinion.

I also have to believe that Bush would not have nominated and fought so hard for the likes of JRB, Owen, Pryor, and Estrada if he had no intention of having them backed up by the SCOTUS.

Finally, he has yet to show me that he is not serious about the task at hand. He has nominated to my liking thus far, and I will support him until I have a good reason to do otherwise.
