Russia in a Hurry to Sell Weapons to Iran
Kommersant ^ | 26.09.2005

Posted on 09/29/2005 12:55:31 AM PDT by F14 Pilot

Russia is intensifying efforts to sell weapons to Iran while such sales remain legal amid mounting pressure on the Islamic state over its controversial nuclear program, the daily Kommersant said on Monday.

Moscow “has stepped up military-technological cooperation with Tehran,” the business daily said, citing an unidentified source.

It said top officials within Russia’s military-industrial complex decided to concentrate on arms sales to Tehran for two reasons.

“Firstly, as many weapons as possible must be sold to Iran before an international embargo against this country comes into force.”

Secondly, should the United States decide to go to war in Iran, Russia wants Iran to be well-armed to ensure that U.S. forces become at least as bogged down there as they already are in Iraq, the daily said.

“In either case, such a policy carries a high risk of creating a major international scandal, at the very least,” the newspaper commented.

The report came two days after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) formally found Iran in violation of its obligations under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), a decision the United States hailed as a “significant step forward” in its efforts to curb Iran’s nuclear plans, AFP added.

“The United States no longer even hides the fact that, in parallel with diplomacy at the IAEA, it is making preparations to resolve the conflict by force,” Kommersant said.

The U.S. ambassador to the ex-Soviet republic of Azerbaijan, which borders Iran, told AFP in a recent interview that Washington is encouraging — and helping fund — a build-up in the capacities of naval forces for Azerbaijan and another former Soviet republic, Kazakhstan.

Both border the oil-rich Caspian Sea, as does Iran. In its assertion that Washington is already making preparations for military action in the region, Kommersant cited the U.S.-funded construction of two radar stations in Azerbaijan.

... I don't understand why America decided to declare Iran as enemy. Unfriendly - yes, but enemy?

Where the hell have you been for the past 25 years? The mullahs in Tehran declared war on the US in 1979. About time we reciprocated.

Wait a minute... President Bush said Russia is our friend and something about the look in Putin's eyes says he can be trusted...

Now I'm confused...

From post #11 "I hope they're getting a lot of those really good GPS jammers that Saddam bought from the Russians. Those worked out great!"

Putin, as always, is playing with his cards close to his vest. We know how effective ex-Soviet hardware has been to Saddam. But how effective was the hardware sold to Iraq within weeks of the US led Coalition’s taking Iraq away from Saddam?

The "GPS jammers" might as well have been "target locators" for all we know. It's not that difficult a double cross. There are plenty of examples of smart munitions with "home on jam" software guiding their terminal flight. No doubt all arms dealers and buyers know this. Russia and Iran have traditionally been at each others throats by proxy (battles in Afghanistan, Dagestan, and Chechnya in particular). Weapons deals of ex-Soviet and modern Russian hardware would be more convincing if they had been sold through China or North Korea. I doubt even Castro and Chaves would want to play this hustle.

If this is so, and if Putin is playing a repeat of what he sold to Saddam, it might be to butter up an EU Coalition strike. I suspect that W. Europe is tired of playing second fiddle to world military powers and they want to see if their war toys work. Iranians are ripe for democracy and the world is tired of its tyrannical theocracy waving a nuclear gun in everyone's face. Countering Iran similar to how the US countered Iraq would give the UN a quasi-legitimacy that it lost to Saddam. Containing radical fundamentalism might redeem the UN in the minds of free men, but I doubt the Pope would agree unless the UN bans abortion and stem cell murders FIRST. Then the UN’s international courts would have the moral high ground to protect innocent Iranian lives (similar to how President Lincoln took the moral high ground to free slaves in the American Civil War and return rebel states to the Union).

My head tells me that this is possible. My heart warns me that it’s unlikely. My heart tells me this of secular (godless) powers governing Western and former Communist nations.

Secularists will focus on a radical and tyrannical criminal power (that happens to be a theocracy) that’s stepped way out of popular favor even among its own people. The secular (godless) will see the short term improvement and will stifle ALL religions whose origins come from Abraham—Judaism, Islam, and especially Christianity. Fanatical criminals like Hamas may be uprooted from its very garden, but the struggle to recognize the Truth of God in human courts will continue (as men refuse to see the devil’s reality). The UN, US, Russia, and the EU will continue to murder unborn children and inflict Frankenstein stem cell science upon the weakest members of humanity. The godless will attempt to spread their errors of hedonism, substance abuse, and financial slavery to present Western paradigms of legitimacy and popular consensus.

The good that survives and prospers amidst the future persecutions will recognize Jesus Christ for who He really Is. Those who don’t will continue to persecute the land of His birth and will eventually turn upon Israel in all ways similar to that as the human body and soul has in free will to reject God. I don’t worry about this because God’s enemies will be slaughtered in such a way as to make the task of burying their dead bodies almost impossible.

A F22 or M1A2SEP or M2A3 or B2 or Seawolf bring little in a situation like in LA. The military can help, as it did! But its purpose is to fight wars, not replace state and local systems.

In recent years people have adopted the typical entitlement and big government attitude as in most of Europe. It's NOT the DoD’s purpose to fight fires in CA, yet we have plans and when needed we will do what we can. It’s not our purpose to be boarder patrol, customs or airport security. But if tasked the DoD will respond and it will perform well, despite all the other commitments globally and nationally.

If the governor, mayor and chief of Police in LA, New Orleans are on their @ss, it's not a failure of the DoD. The musical chairs or finger pointing by those in LA who ARE responsible for this failure are the ones that should suffer the consequences.

It’s no coincidence that North Carolina, Texas and many other states get hit with hurricanes and have few issues, while LA fell down. FACT: FEMA even responded in less time in LA than in several other similar cases elsewhere. It’s NOT “Bush’s fault”. It’s not the “DOD’s fault”, it’s not racist as some proposed. It’s not even FEMA’s fault. Bottom line here is that your elected officials matter. They impact your life, and when they are incompetent party boys as in New Orleans, (people may like the guy because he can get “Jiggie with it”) you’ll pay when you require a “Leader”.

"How many times I have written to you and warned you don’t trust Putin. This is a strategic game chess play; of fore open your eyes. What you think this is a game of fore is not. This is well calculated maneuver wake up America time for old school lessons, Putin is playing a game two can do that, time for you to start selling weapons to Kazakhstan, Ukraine Chechnya and Georgia and others of fore you will see how fast Putin will get quiet. Merge Military Corporation with India, slowly but gradually expand bases in Iraq and Afghanistan of which I know you have. Too really piss off Kremlin and make Putin go paranoid place nuclear weapons in those bases. Pekin will go absolutely frantic, of fore Kremlin will go nuts Putin will have to take a brick and hit himself or better place nuclear and hydrogen bombs in Taiwan you will see attitude will change. It takes force of force however it takes strong position. Putin is playing games with you wake up.

"They just don't see America's enemies as their enemies. We could tell them that if they see weapons to Iran, we'll sell weapons to the Chechnyans. Maybe then they will understand our issue here."

Except that now Al Queda has intermingled forces with them, so we would be aiding our main enemy. We helped Bin Laden against the Soviets once and look what he gave us in return. I doubt we will try that again.

"I believe the Bible says that in the last days, there will be an unholy alliance between Russia and Iran (Gog and Persia)."

Ezekial 38. Russia, Iran and other Arabs attack Israel to plunder the land of gold and riches. They devise an "injurious scheme" then attack. The scripture says their numbers are are like a cloud covering the land. God says He brings these nations to attack Israel for His own glory, and that they will be defeated with fire and brimstone from the sky. It goes on to say that Israel with plunder and loot Gog & Magog and that it will take seven months for Isreal to clean up the carnage.

My intepretation of prophecy in the old testament and Revelations matches what you are saying in general. Man has a heart that inclines towards the bad. It states this in Genesis and Christ was a redemption for man. Man is not capable of running the earth. In fact, we are destroying it. We have had the technology for 100 years to be rid of nasty, polluting oil and replace it but power and greed keep us chained to the arabs. Corporate corruption and greed is rampant. All sign of the end of our age. God will correct what man cannot. This will be painful correction, but the good news is that it is temporary and short-lived. Aftewards, we get 1,000 years of peace and prosperity.

I think it was the Shaw of Iran that said, "Oil is too good to burn." Funny that he'd say such a think, but petroleum is a remarkable resource.

It's true what you say. How quickly the hearts of men forget the Justice and Mercy of God.

"We helped Bin Laden against the Soviets once and look what he gave us in return. I doubt we will try that again." You wrote

Get this out of your head! In many liberal Blogs and even some news articles you will read stuff to this end. The CIA or the military NEVER trained OBL. He was NEVER on the US payroll..........

This "assumption" was made by some in the MSM and has burnt itself into the masses's perception as a fact by now. It's WRONG! Wrong wrong wrong. Ut who cares in the MSM? They just quote each other and perpetuate more BS like the Rather documents on Bush.

Looks like one of those undeclared tests between American and Russian military technologies may be in the works again.
