WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush, nearing the end of his search for a successor to retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, has whittled his list to a handful of candidates and could announce his decision by week's end.
"We have been listening to the views and ideas of members of the Senate, and the president will take those into account as he makes a decision about who should fill that vacancy," White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Tuesday

Harriet Miers?
President Bush on November 17 (2004) named Harriet Miers as White House counsel, a position she will hold upon the Senate confirmation of Alberto Gonzales -- current White House counsel -- as U.S. Attorney General.
Most recently, Miers served as Assistant to the President and Staff Secretary. Prior to that, she was Co-Managing Partner at Locke Liddell & Sapp, LLP. Previously, she was President of Locke, Purnell, Rain & Harrell, where she worked from 1972 until 1999.
From 1995 until 2000, she was chair of the Texas Lottery Commission. In 1992, Harriet became the first woman president of the Texas State Bar, and in 1985 she became the first woman president of the Dallas Bar Association. She also served as a Member-At-Large on the Dallas City Council.
Harriet received both her undergraduate and law degrees from Southern Methodist University.
Roberts seems smarter than at least two Senators. Perhaps he should just get two votes. Or maybe Scalia or Thomas could be appointed twice. I don't see where this is prohibited in the Constitution.
Right - Harriet Miers????????? Never heard of her, but Drudge has a prominent location on his website for this link.
President George W. Bush announced his intention to appoint Harriet Miers to be Counsel to the President. Ms. Miers will fill the position held by Judge Alberto Gonzales, following his confirmation by the Senate.
Prior to joining the White House staff, Ms. Miers was Co-Managing Partner at Locke Liddell & Sapp, LLP, where she helped manage an over 400-lawyer firm. Previously, she was President of Locke, Purnell, Rain & Harrell, where she worked for 26 years. In 1992, Ms. Miers became the first woman elected Texas State Bar President following her selection in 1985 as the first woman to become President of the Dallas Bar Association. She also served as a Member-At-Large on the Dallas City Council. Ms. Miers received her bachelor's degree and J.D. from Southern Methodist University.
The last time the media tried this they got a real surpise.
I will NOT be happy with this nomination because SHE is not a PROVEN originalist. She is also too OLD @ 59.
Put down your drink, and step away from the bar.
I've heard suggestions that the best way to save the country from a Hillary! presidency is to get her on the SC where she will have only 1/9 power.
5 year chair of the Texas Lottery Commission? Please tell me it isn't so.
On Miers:
As governor he (President Bush) once introduced her as a "pit bull in size 6 shoes."
"When it comes to a cross-examination," Mr. Bush said, "she can fillet better than Mrs. Paul" a reference to the purveyor of frozen fish.
"Harriet Miers is not a yes person," Ms. Clements added. "She has the character and the capabilities to say no if she thinks no is the right answer."

My guess: Priscilla Owen.
She does look a little long in the tooth, but that doesn't mean she lacks guts - she just needs to cancel out, and out last Ginsburg.
According to Jay Sekulow, she is not a judge, she is the President's attorney and he said it would be a good pick. They cannot bitch because she is a woman, and she is close to George Bush and is conservative. Sekulow said it would be either Thompson,Miers,or Gonzalez. I think he was leaning to Miers big time.
That sounds like me - if true she'll have my support.
Ms. Miers currently serves as Assistant to the President and Deputy Chief of Staff. Most recently, she served as Assistant to the President and Staff Secretary.
