I can't answer you because they were so disagreeable that I never got close enough to know. These were people I would not like to be seen with, and there has been no change in things, so far as I can tell.

What is it about protesters and poor hygiene? Maybe they double as anti-war and pro-water conservationists?

In Michael Medved's recent autobiography, he says that, even during the anti-Vietnam heyday, he realized that the scruffiness and general anti-social nature of the protestors would not help the movement because "middle America" would be turned off.
He sure was right.

Call me old fashioned, but I wish for the days that America-hating, dope smoking, scum-bag hippie protestors were treated with their due respect.

I'm not offended. I just need an excuse to talk about my boy. And since he can't read yet, he doesn't know what I'm talking about. ;^)

For many of these so called people, this is just a hobby, I bet they could careless what is going on in the world in reality. Perhaps a bunch of the hard core catalysts who incite the masses do, but create a event for kids to show up to.
Abby Hoffman, once said, guys use to show up to demonstrations to meet chicks. This is still true, probably. It is where people of common way of life get to hang out together.
There is no Grateful Dead concert for people to go to. I admit I had followed the Dead in my younger days and many famous conservatives have too. There was always this crowd there, the elements who never seemed to work for a living, but the whole scene for my friends and I was the party, there was no politics for us there, though there were politicals.
These kids will when they are 30 hopefully get jobs and be just like me to some extent (good thing or bad thing I don't know). Politically, conservative to a most extent but with my own mind, not locked in the party line or into doing stuff because everyone else is doing it.

...we called them "Trustafarians"
Caucasian teens/twentysomethings with dreadlocks anointed with some concoction of essential oils - primarily patchouli - in place of bathing. They either sponge off of their parents or manage to get by selling veggie burritos, glass pipes, tie dye clothing or macrame thingamabobs along the remains of the Phish/Grateful Dead tour circuit. Some "sell out" and open "lifestyle" boutiques. Kinda hard to go mainstream when you haven't washed your hair in years and you have 24+ piercings above the neck.
