September 28, 2005 -- DAN Rather wants to reopen the investigation into President Bush and the National Guard story that resulted in the Memogate scandal and led to his early departure from the anchor desk. But his bosses at CBS have forbidden him to go back at it, he said.
"CBS News doesn't want me to do that story," Rather said. "They wouldn't let me do that story,"
Rather continues to insist that the story was correct and suggested in the interview that he and the network may have been set up by some outsider.
"There are some strange, and to me, still mysterious things," he said. "Certainly unexplained things that happened about how it got attacked and why, even before the program was over," Rather said.
The report, delivered by Rather last September, was discredited two weeks later after drawing fire, first from politically conservative Web logs and later from mainstream media.
"I believed in the story," Rather said. "The facts of the story were correct.
"One supporting pillar of the story, albeit an important one, one supporting pillar was brought into question," he said. "To this day, no one has proven whether it was what it purported to be or not."

Please Dan, by all means, put that final nail in the coffin of the Mainstream Media.
It's gotta drive him insane. After such a long career, having THIS as his legacy. I love it. He's an idiot.
"It means they're isolated, blind, and self-absorbed to an extent I never would have believed if they hadn't said so."
That comes from living in Manhattan and only working with, reading about, watching tv shows about, and living near people who think exactly like you do. Running every thought through a party-platform filter and squashing any independent though helps too.
Well, DUH. The facts of every story are correct. The trick is in realizing that the story contained very few facts.
If nobody had proven whether it was what it was purported to be, why did CBS use it as an important supporting pillar of their story?
Most insane people put more effort into reconciling the contradictions in their fantasy worlds than this...
Remember danny, "if it isn't true it should be, it captures the essence of what your trying to say"
psychosis is what I call it.
They have simply become soo blind by their pathological hate for republicans and conservatives, they have lost all critical perspective of what is real and what isn't.
They thrived when they had complete control over what information the public was provided. They could say whatever they wanted, no matter how biased, and there was no outlet to judge this or for people to defend themselves.
But now with the internet and other news sources, its blown their monopoly right out of the water. It's killing Dan that the liberal elites have lost soo much power. That they can't control the news and media anymore. That their lies can be easily debunked and displayed to the public.
Stick a fork in the liberal media monopoly. It's done.
If Rather wants to open this up so the nation can see exactly how biased, nutty, and abusive the MSM is, let him. Why not expose the lies and hatred of the liberal MSM? This is the same 60 Minutes that took a real tape of Clinton and Jennifer Flowers and showed how it was probably a fake. Didn't they set up the lie about Food Lion? There must be hundreds of lies they've pushed over the years - if this is opened up, it's open for all of us... It's time to stand with Rather - come on CBS, tie your credibility to fake documents and the man who hates conservatives.
Danny boy is in the process of being destroyed right before our eyes.
Has he even called OHIO for President Bush yet?
Dan Rather knows the climate against Bush is warm, so to cover his butt he is bringing the story back.
Dan: "I want to attack this story like a hungry beast attacking his prey."
Please CBS, let Dan do his piece. Don't shut him up! ;-)
Hey Dan, bet you could use a bridge. Tell you what I'll do...
ABC News ran that story.
That's hilarious!
You would think a major news organization would have people reading the important blogs. Nobody can know everything...or even most things...but it's a professional responsibility to at least try to avoid being blindsided by the obvious.
I'm just an old guy living in an isolated community. But I read The Daily Kos and the Agonist as well as FR and Powerline. That a major new org doesn't do even that boggles my mind.
And my very favorite non story on 60 minutes - Meryl Streep giving a lecture on the dangerous of Alar. If you can't find any facts, why find an actor willing to play the part of an expert. That way you get your point of view out there. Facts or no facts. Dannyboy has been playing this game for years. He just finally got caught. Thank god for the Internet and Free Republic and Howlin and Buckhead.
On behalf of bitter old morons everywhere, I resent your insulting comparison.
