Terri Schiavo's family announces book plans

Terri Schiavo's parents and siblings are writing a book about their struggle in the epic end-of-life case that divided the country and captured the attention of everyone from the Pope John Paul II to President Bush, their publisher said Tuesday. The yet untitled memoir by parents Bob and Mary Schindler, brother Bobby Schindler and sister Suzanne Vitadamo will be published in March to coincide with the first anniversary of the death of the brain-damaged woman, whose feeding tube was removed after her husband won a court order to do so.

"This book is the moving story of an ordinary family caught up in extraordinary circumstances, and it will set the record straight for the first time," said Jamie Raab, senior vice president and publisher at Warner Books in New York.

The Schindlers' book is likely to compete for space on the shelves with a memoir by Terri Schiavo's husband, Michael, who fought his in-laws in court for eight years to end her life, arguing she would not have wanted to be kept alive in what doctors called a persistent vegetative state. Michael Schiavo said he is collaborating on the book with author Michael Hirsh. The 280-page book is titled "Terri: the Truth," and is planned for release in March by Dutton Publishing.

The Schindlers will donate profits from the book to a foundation they established when they were fighting to save Terri's life, Warner Books said. The foundation now is dedicated to protecting severely disabled people.

The press release announcing the book said Terri Schiavo's parents and siblings "fought simply as a caring family and never the ideological zealots depicted by the mainstream media.

"For the first time ever, they will share their love and sorrow, joy and pain, and some shocking revelations as they honor Terri's life, mourn her death, and finally tell the whole story, the true story, of an innocent woman who met a needlessly premature death."

It's always instructive to note those posters who come up with snide and sarcastic names like "Saint Terri". It's almost like you're making fun of a brain damaged woman who, regardless of her level of conciousness, was recently starved to death by court order. Oh wait, that's exactly what you're doing.

Snide? Sarcastic?
Hardly. I was accurately quoting some of the more absurd statements I've seen by adherents to her quasi-cult.

Though you're hardly worth it, I've taken the time to hunt down a a few examples:

1) Saint Terri sounds ok to me... Right up there with Saint Joan of Arc..
2) "I am all for a Saint Teresa. The patron saint of the disabled."
3) We are going to save this Saint & symbol of Hope...(Fatima, Save St.Theresa of Clearwater)

I could post more.
It's hardly 'making fun' when I have the quotes to back it up.

Should I also post the image some Terri-obsessive created to post on FR?
It was of a naked Terri Schiavo on the cross, like Jesus.

Even the moderators thought that was over the top, but I saved it for posterity.

Terri is dead yet the threads live on. She's received more thread time than Ronald Reagan.

It's ridiculous, isn't it?

The threads seem to be getting cranked up again — just in time for the Freepathon.
That fact makes me realize my decision to stop contributing was the right one.

I refuse to enable ANY more Terri hysteria.

Unbelievable. I remember seeing those and you just can't carry on a conversation with thought processes of that order.

"The only way that family gets anything near closure for the hell they went through"

I wish I could believe that, but experience tells me they're looking to extend their 15 minutes in the spotlight and pick up a few bucks along the way.

I can't imagine where she came up with that line of thinking. We were discussing motivations behind agendas, not ownership of the thread. Then she came sweeping through like the Cuckoo for Coco Puffs bird, ranting about who owns the thread. Last time I checked, some "active Air Force guy" owned all these threads. For those who didn't follow the recent Dan Blather interview, that means Jim Robinson.

Who me? I'm against making money off your child's death.

Then you must be very supportive of Terri's parents, who are telling her story, and directing the profits to a foundation to save others from the abuse and murder inflicting on her. Or do you have some hidden agenda that you are trying to hide behind false statements of altruism?

Check out lady lawyer's comments, reflect on other similar book deals and think about how behavior changes when money enters the equations. If you do that and you still believe that nothing is motivating the Schindlers save noble altruism, then I've got a pre-owned vehicle (hardly used!) that I'd like to sell you.

Maybe you come from a family that doesn't love their children, but the Schindlers love each other. I know that can be hard to relate to if you have no point of reference in your own life. Maybe it would help if you just examined their past behavior.

Way to address the argument. I guess I have to return a personal attack on the same level now. You're a poopyhead!

Well, I addressed the argument directly. Can I help it if you can't handle the truth?

I must have missed where you did that. Could you repeat it for me please? I'll do the same.

I believe that the Schindlers' publication of this book is motivated at least partially by money. They state that profits from the sale of this book will go to the foundation, but they do not use the usual formulation of "all profits" or "100% of the profits". That leads me to believe that they intend to keep some of the money for themselves. Furthermore, as it was previously mentioned on this thread, several members of the Schindler family are officers in this foundation. That means that the can pay themselves a salary out of the foundation's funds. That means that they would profit indirectly, rather than directly from the sale of this book. Finally, common experience shows that money corrupts. It is only natural to conclude that the Schindlers' could personally profit from this book sale, a possibility I believe you dismiss out of hand because of the sympathy you feel for them. Don't be a sucker.

I don't dismiss the possibility that they might recoup some of their financial losses. I have considered the accusation that the Schindlers are corrupt, and found it to be a false accusation, based solely on the limited knowledge of the accusers. Those who know the Schindlers, and have a frame of reference in our own lives that allows us to understand the love a parent feels for their children, know that the accusers are just projecting their own corruption onto others, in an attempt to feel better about themselves.

I just pray these people stay away from nursing homes. No one would survive if these few people had any say, especially on the alzheimers unit....they would be pulling feeding tubes, shoving people in a corner and telling them it is going to be a peaceful and even a happy death.

At least the majority of Freepers know it is wrong to starve someone to death....

How ANYONE defends Michael after what he did, ya know murdering Terri and then the headstone he put up....is beyond me. Michael will do anything to make the Schindler's look bad as he keep grinding that knife into their wound. Shame on him!

My neighbor came over yesterday to borrow something, and we chatted for a while. During our conversation, she told me about a friend of hers who recently died. Her medications had gotten mixed up, and she had a bad reaction, that left her in a coma for a couple days. When she came out of the coma, before they had an opportunity to evaluate any brain damage, someone at the hospital turned off her respirator. By the time anyone discovered it, she had been without oxygen for an estimated 20 minutes. They were unable to revive her, and she died.

Somebody tell me, just one more time, that this over, and it will never happen again, so I should just ignore it.

How very sad. Good thing the few around here were not around or she would have been dead the minute she went into the coma....ya know, can't be wasting perfectly good oxygen on someone in a coma!!! Sarcasm off////

No, I won't tell you that this stuff is over and will never happen again...I can tell you that it won't happen to anyone I love, that is a guarantee....and I will support and work to help those who cannot help themselves.

A bit hyperbolic wouldn't you say? Since you are related to the Schiavo family perhaps you could tell us the exact relation you have to them and how they are doing? I have to assume you are related as I see you are in Oklahoma and otherwise you would be a nanny interfering with the internal affairs of the sovereign state of Florida which would be none of your business

And yes I have family in rest homes and no I do not shove them into corners or pull feeding tubes. However they do have a DNR and a living will that states when they have chosen is acceptable to pass on to their Heavenly reward
