I just pray these people stay away from nursing homes. No one would survive if these few people had any say, especially on the alzheimers unit....they would be pulling feeding tubes, shoving people in a corner and telling them it is going to be a peaceful and even a happy death.

At least the majority of Freepers know it is wrong to starve someone to death....

My neighbor came over yesterday to borrow something, and we chatted for a while. During our conversation, she told me about a friend of hers who recently died. Her medications had gotten mixed up, and she had a bad reaction, that left her in a coma for a couple days. When she came out of the coma, before they had an opportunity to evaluate any brain damage, someone at the hospital turned off her respirator. By the time anyone discovered it, she had been without oxygen for an estimated 20 minutes. They were unable to revive her, and she died.

Somebody tell me, just one more time, that this over, and it will never happen again, so I should just ignore it.

A bit hyperbolic wouldn't you say? Since you are related to the Schiavo family perhaps you could tell us the exact relation you have to them and how they are doing? I have to assume you are related as I see you are in Oklahoma and otherwise you would be a nanny interfering with the internal affairs of the sovereign state of Florida which would be none of your business

And yes I have family in rest homes and no I do not shove them into corners or pull feeding tubes. However they do have a DNR and a living will that states when they have chosen is acceptable to pass on to their Heavenly reward

Hospice Patients Alliance

These 2 sources are a good starting point for people to educate themselves on what is happening to disabled and elderly patients. It can't be denied that these 2 groups of people are vulnerable. There is no "guarantee" that anyone's written wishes will be honored as most states do not require doctors to honor living wills or advance directives.

Lots of things have been said about the people who supported Terri's right to live and many have been labeled as fanatics and extremists but I think that if people would take some time to research the issue they would realize that there are many "Terris" and there will be more "Terris". It's sad imo that more of these cases aren't in the news.

Even with the information that the auditor of the guardianship accounts in Pinellas County, Robert W. Melton, has supplied there is not one thing being done to fix the problem. What in the world are people supposed to do whenever the people in authority who are supposed to oversee certain matters don't do their job? Elect them for Governor?

Scott Thomas is in a vulnerable position but is fortunate that they got a better judge than Greer. Even though he can understand and communicate he is considered "incapacitated" by law and could possibly be placed under his wife's authority in the future.
