"There's about 500 that haven't been accounted for," the chief responds. "Whether they have quit, whether they have perished in the storm. Whether they're with loved ones, you know. But we have 1,200 that we can account for."

Could one of those missing officers come to Compass and say, "Chief, look, I had to take care of my family." Or, "This is why I wasn't here." And could that person still be a part of the New Orleans Police Department?

"I can understand taking care of your family, and coming right back," says Compass. "I can understand that. But I cannot understand staying with your family while we were going through these conditions, and not backing us up."

Some other outside force

That's a close enough description.

Wait and see how this all falls out. Then you will know.

Jim Brown wrote a book while he was in prison and upon his release, hit the t.v. and talk show circuit throughout the entire state and was treated like the prodigal son returning home.

I couldn't believe it. We have one conservative talk show that covers the entire state and is hosted by Moon Griffon and he had Jim Brown on his show and gushed over him like he was Pamela Anderson in a wet T-shirt.

Boy, I saw President Bush with Governor Blanco and I told my husband that he was really PO'd!

Wish I'd seen this. Can you provide more info, date, time, source? Thanks.

That book has been banned by the liberals. Probably no one under 40 will even get the allusion unless they are an autodidact who FReeps.

Someone I know emailed me from Baton Rouge (a lawyer), after he got up there; he told me Nagin was a professional who had a good job and sweet salary, gave it up to be mayor (not much money and had to switch parties to do it). He said he has no expertise in the job but he was a good guy (and a party animal)... and said there was more to the story...
I'll call him tonight and see what he gives up... since the cat's out of the bag anyway.

He also did his best to get the white folk out of the way when plans went sour.

What do you mean by this?

What was Jim Brown in jail for? The usual NFL crime - spousal abuse?

Take a look at this Sept 1, 2000 article:

Fighting Crime and Corruption in New Orleans
By Peter Ross Range

....Despite a reputation for corruption and laissez-faire policies, New Orleans has used smart politics, public-private partnerships, federal funds, and openness to outside help to create one of the leading reform stories of the 1990s. Labeled in the mid-1990s as "Murder Capital, U.S.A.," New Orleans now claims one of the fastest dropping crime rates in the nation despite a recent upsurge in murders. In addition, under the leadership of a new police superintendent imported from Washington, D.C., using methods borrowed from New York and personnel lent by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) has dramatically reshaped and reformed itself from a vortex of vice to a tightly managed organization with a powerful Public Integrity Division. The result may be a model for the 2000s......

.....Dramatic pay increases and stringent recruitment standards, including the hiring of 500 new officers to bring the department up to the minimum recommended strength of 1,700;....?????????

....An infusion of federal funds and the strong engagement of the local business community to purchase new equipment, finance salary increases, and reduce the need for police officers to accept corruption-prone moonlighting jobs as private security;

....as Katrina approached they hatched a media savvy plan...blame George W. Bush and his FEMA.

There was a story about the first meeting between Bush and Nagin after Katrina. Remember, Nagin was going off the deep end at the time. I recall a report that Nagin came out of his meeting with Bush a changed man, i.e. he "found religion". No more finger-pointing and name-calling. I always wondered what it was that GW said to him to sober him up.....

I too think Nagin was just a dupe. He just doesn't seem to have the intelligence to be the ringleader in all this.

If the phantom police story is true, Nagin will be the fall guy.

Blanco is in bigtime CYA mode with all her kissing Presidential behind. Something tells me she too is a bigger dupe, or is that dope?

I don't know LA politics too well, who is Mr. Big?

Exactly, who has the corruption stuff? Or do you know which threads we left it in. I knew we needed a thread of just links before.
