Shuma is at least in a loving home (it's a human grief problem, not a dog-grief problem).... so she's lucky. The ones that aren't so lucky are the ones that are still in cages.... still wandering the streets. I hope they end up in good homes. Please, no matter where you are, consider adopting a dog from your local shelter.

Ping!

I would love to adopt but my Maddie is kinda Alpha and she is 10 years old and I know her like the back of my hand, (I am her mom) and I know she wouldn't tolerate an adult dog, perhaps a puppy but it would have to pass the non-Alpha test
Are there puppies up for adoption?

But Shuma was especially trained to help someone with a disability. Easy to say "get another dog", but Shuma had special abilities as far as her owner. So, it is not just a grief issue. That is like a seeing eye dog being fostered out and the family refusing to release him to the owner. As always, JMHO. :)

I'm still going to post pics of my Katrina Rescue Shepherd (Rita stifled my plans last weekend), but hopefully this coming weekend will be more productive. I'm in Lafayette, LA and volunteer at a no kill shelter...we're full right now, but if anyone in S. Central LA is looking for a dog (or cat) of all makes, models and vintages, let me know, or look here:

I cannot say that the living conditions for Shuma are loving. How can it be if a she refuses to return the beloved pet to his owner. I do not find that loving. What type of example is setting for her kids.

Yes, he is at least off the streets but loving I cannot agree with that.

I do agree, we need to what he can to help all pet's without a home.

That is a huge bump to your comment.

Not so sure about Shuma being in a Loving home, Hair. The real (first) owner has been on the radio today, and it turns out that Nevills lied to get the dog; she told Wyrick that her husband was a police officer and the dog would be trained as a drug dog but it turns out that Indpendence PD doesn't know who she is and has no police officer by that name.

The general thought around here is that Shuma is going to be turned into a breeder dog. Turns out that she is only 14 months old, not 14 years old, and Nevills has all her registration papers. Missouri is famous for our lousy puppy mills.

So sorry to say this is not a so happy ending for Shuma.

We are family who loves canine companions and depend on the love and company of canines on those home bound days and not so home bound days.

For this new owner not to have the compassion to give SHuma back to the disabled owner who's only crime is he was temporarily homeless due to Katrina.

If this new owner shows such a lack of compassion to NOT return Shuma to the Man who trained and has bonded in a way "non disabled society" just doesn't get it says volumes about her potential commitment to Shuma if her life should ever turn upside down.

What a Witch! Oh and I am being online nice in calling her a witch.

Shuma is at least in a loving home (it's a human grief problem, not a dog-grief problem).... so she's lucky.

Actually, we don't know that...

Today on a local talk show, Darla Jay, the host was speaking with the gentleman, and it seems that this woman was NOT on the up and up, and may have committed fraud. She told the man that her "husband" was an Independence, MO police officer, but when they checked, the PD had never heard of the guy. She also said that she was a volunteer working with the Independence PD K-9 unit, and that's suspect as well. She's accused the man of NOT being a hurricane evacuee, and that Shuma was abused. However, she's no longer talking to anyone, and refuses to release photos of "the abused" animal. There are some who believe that this woman was hanging out at the animal shelter in order to avoid the legal paperwork, and to ensure that the dog wasn't "fixed," in order to sell it to a "puppy mill."

There are a lot of questions here. I was previously of the belief that this guy made a bad decision, but there was nothing that could be done, since he signed the dog over. Now, because of the misrepresentations, there might be fraud involved. I now believe that the city or state should get involved here.

What a witch that woman is! I know very few families that don't consider their pet a member of the family. She SHOULD be arrested and charged.

"Hey! I know I'm just the babysitter, but my family has grown attached to your child. You'll just have to get a new one."

I have to reply to what Hair of the Dog said yeaterday about it NOT being a grieving problem for Shuma......do not kid yourself that dog is grieving, she has been taken from her master of 14 years, she is with strangers she feels abandoned, she hurts, she's sad!! And with a woman of this moral caliber can this truly be a loving home?? Animals grieve it's not just a known "Scientific" fact, it is a fact long witnessed by man.
I respect what you said about her being safe, but lord, I feel for that dog. if there were any justice.....
