South Carolina - A group of Lowcountry Animal Lovers is back from New Orleans with 25 furry survivors in need of a home.
The Humane Net Team is made up of volunteers from several Lowcountry Rescue Organizations.
The group spent 9 days in New Orleans rescuing animals left behind and distributing a truck load of supplies.
"We handed out food and crates, towels and they're begging for more. They don't have anything left, nothing. We brought 25 animals back that we rescued out of houses were people couldn't take them with them," says Barbara Bryant of the Humane Net Team.

Though many hurricane pets are finding a happy ending others are not.
A Hurricane Katrina Evacuee had to flee his Mississippi home but the shelters would not allow one of his family members to enter, Shuma, the family dog.
The family had no choice but to choose the shelter over their pet, and took Shuma to an animal shelter in Independence.
John Wyrick is trying to start a new life in Missouri but he may have to do it without Shuma.
That's because a woman who volunteered to take in the German Shepherd has refused to give it back.
Wyrick has a serious back injury that limits his abilities.
He raised and trained Shuma to help him with his daily routine.
A volunteer convinced Wyrick to sign the dog over to her for the time being.
But just weeks later, Lynn Nevills refuses to give the Shuma back saying her family is now attached to the dog and Wyrick should get a new one.
Local, Kansas City, residents have tried to help the Wyricks get Shuma back but Nevills refuses to negotiate.
OK, then. I agree with you that no breed should die out. However, there needs to be strict regulation on the breeding of dogs and cats. Inbreeding has nearly ruined a great many breeds.
I will also take my cross bred Harm over any thoroughbred in the world. He is smart, handsome, loyal, gentle, protective, and does not have the health problems that so many purebreds have. He is Alaskan Malamute/Siberian Husky/Lab cross.
FR spams Hannity....film at 8.....:D
I hear you loud and clear :)
"There's nothing that "MORE COWBELL!" can't fix.......)"
*I am laughing out loud* Can ya' hear me?
>If people saw how many unwanted dogs and cats were killed at the "shelters" every day in America; they'd probably demand a temporary suspension of breeding!<
The animal rights wackos have already demanded such a suspension. It's sad to see their solution echoed here on a conservative forum.
A truly responsible dog breeder sells pups either already spay/neutered, or with a contract requiring the surgery. Not only that, they often have the buyer sign a contract requiring notification and return of the pet if the buyer decides not to keep the animal.
Demanding responsible breeders cease and desist breeding purebred animals ethically will not stop irresponsible people from letting their intact dogs and cats produce mixed or unplanned litters. Many dogs that end up in shelters (in normal times, not after natural disasters), end up there because of behavioral problems (the dog becomes too much trouble, and is then discarded).
How about encouraging localities to fund low-cost spay neuter clinics, and low-cost obedience classes? Our local SPCA recently hired a canine behavior specialist, who holds puppy kindergarten classes for adopted puppies and older dogs. The reduction in shelter returns is being felt already.
Remember, what we are seeing is the result of a disaster. It's not going to do a bit of good to fly off the handle and push for breeding bans that do nothing to fix the actual problem.
You really think there is any dog out there whose ancestry going back 7000 years has never included a dog that wasn't of the same "pure" breed? Get a grip. There isn't even a human alive whose genetic ancestry can be documented with any certainty more than a couple of generations back. A huge percentage of babies in DNA testing studies did not have the father who was claimed on the birth certificate. I'm supposed to believe the standards are higher for dogs?
LOL!
I've been told IHs run along the rooftops of the houses on Ibiza and Malta.
I'd love to see that.
[mine just run along the backs of the sofas]...;))
He is Alaskan Malamute/Siberian Husky/Lab cross.
And you can still tell what he is.... and can learn something about him from those traits he brings from those breeds.
The answer is ~not~ to randomize all dog breeding into the same kind of generic lab terrier mutt.... how boring is that?
There is strict regulation in the form of AKC registration and recordkeeping. More regulation would do what exactly? make all people make good decisions?
Folks, this is just part of the dirty, unpredictability of life.... we need to stop thinking that with the right rules in place we can fix all problems.
I had a pure bred Alaskan Malamute about 30 years ago.
Beautful dog but dumber than dirt.
Ate every stick of furniture in the house. LOL
And would howl all night at every full moon.
Ran out in front of a Mustang(car) one time, the dog flew up in the air and broke her leg when she landed. Bent the whole front end of the car. The owner of the car felt bad about hitting the dog. I felt worse about the dog bending up his car. LOL
"Can ya' hear me?"
Was that you?
*whew*
I thought it was those dang *voices* again....;D
Nobody should be breeding dogs that can't deliver puppies safely without a caesarian. And any organization that is issuing "papers" for such dogs is no better than the worst puppy mill operator.
You make some good points, I just hate to see all those dogs & cats killed every day.
"ethical breeders?" is that like "ethical lawyers?" LOL
Pictures of them are chiseled into the walls of the pyramids and the DNA of mummified ones is the same as modern ones.
"Get a grip"?
My, aren't we just a rude, combative little thing.
I keep forgetting so refresh my memory...*why* are you even on this thread?
Thanks FMC.
I agree that we need to hear both sides of the story and that there are to many unanswered questions, however I still think she should return the dog.
I actually agree with you on that. Any breed that becomes such a freak of nature that it can't reproduce without human help is absolutely undesirable.
Everyone hates to see all those dogs and cats killed everyday. But would you rather see all dogs be only the product of the irresponsible that ~dont~ give a damn about breed? Just the ones who let their dogs run the streets full of hormonse and see what happens?
Dogs aren't only some charity consequence of the irresponsible. They are the valuable, well cultivated workers, hunters and companions people have worked hard to refine. And if they weren't.... you wouldn't see the money and research spent on genetics, veterinary science, animal health, and training that you see now.
The best thing that ever happened to the life of a dog is that the role of the dog has high value to someone.
Ah...is *that* what his/her problem is?
Then I won't waste so much as another electron on it.
Thanks much for the heads up...:)
You are a Marine, right? Did you never see a K9 in action? And just where do you think the dogs come from who serve our country? Do you think those characteristics that make those K9's what they are come out of thin air????
You had a "dumb" Alaskan Malemute. Did you ever bother using the dog for what it's genetic programming specified (that's pulling a sled, btw). Is it just possible that that "dumb" dog may well have done its job very well?
Diffent breeds are designed for different skill sets. A shepherd has to be far more intelligent (at least what we think of as intelligence), than a sled dog. The sled dog has to have brute strength, and capability to pull that sled for hours, for miles, at a time. A Beagle has to be able to find a track and follow it, regardless of what is going on around him.
People get dogs all the time, without the first clue as to what the dog's skill sets are. They expect a bulldog to act like Lassie, and when he doesn't, they blame it on the fact that he's "Dumb".
