A convicted killer in Ohio has just hours to live, and Hurricane Rita has prevented his adoptive parents from seeing him one last time.
Herman Ashworth's parents live in southwestern Louisiana. A combination of a lack of electricity at their home and concerns about gasoline shortages and flooding prevented them from making a flight out of Baton Rouge Sunday. They'd earlier been scheduled to fly from Houston, but the airports were shut down by the storm.
Ashworth, who said he deserves to die for beating to death and robbing 40-year-old Daniel Baker in an alley in 1996, designated no witnesses for his execution Tuesday morning.
Ashworth had little if any sleep overnight as he tried unsuccessfully to reach his a parents again by telephone. They were able to talk by telephone Monday.
The 32-year-old Ashworth is scheduled to die by injection.
Prisons spokeswoman Andrea Dean said Ashworth turned down breakfast early Tuesday morning but would be given another chance to have breakfast. Dean said he was up through the night. He had a two-hour visit from his attorney Monday night.
Ashworth is the fourth condemned prisoner in Ohio to drop his appeals since the state resumed executions in 1999. He said he doesn't want to spend his life in prison. I agree, that is the freakiest headline I have seen.
Why is the reporter so worried about this murderer losing sleep at this point?
Send them the video.
Am I supposed to feel sorry for the adoptive parents, for the convict, what?
I guess I'm one of those mean Repubs -- I don't feel anything.
Well, I feel for his parents. It must be pure anguish to have a child (adopted or not) being put to death for a heinous murder. And moreso to not be able to talk to him one last time.
Damn you Rita Hayworth.
I feel good because Ohio is willing to do what Michigan is not. To eliminate convicted murderers from the face of the earth. More oxygen for the rest of us.
One way or another it looks like he will.
That's ok. Mr. Bakers parents didn't get to see him one last time either.
Just think how his victim's family felt.
The parents of the guy he beat to death weren't able to see their son one last time either.
As for the murderer's parents? Life's tough sometimes. Suck it up.
The parents have no electricity? Maybe their son could loan them a few volts.
Ashworth had little if any sleep overnight . . .
Don't worry buddy, you'll be getting plenty of sleep tomorrow . . .
That's true. But it's still sad. Pity them, don't pity them. Up to you.
Maybe someone could email them some photos of the "event"?
This apparently was not a lovey-dovey relationship since the killer's parents had no intention of being there when he was executed.
ROFLMAO!!
That was perfect. Excuse my morbid sense of humor.
