Shouldn't he be in Tibet, lecturing the Chinese?

Until we no longer have people like the "radical" Islamist around, war will still be with us.

Only the dead have seen the end of war.

C'mon, leave him alone! He's a decent man. Who would you have had as our leader for eight years, the Dalai Lama or Slick Willie? (My choice would have been Pope John Paul II). Here, the Dalai Lama is clearly not offering a criticism of our war effort in Iraq, but an ideal notion of a world without war. I think D.L. knows the real nature of war and what it has done to the Tibetans.

Agreed. Some of these comments on here are very sad. They give a bad name to Free Republic.

He stressed that peace is not just the mere absence of violence but the condition when all actions are motivated by compassion.

The main AP story choose to leave that part out. Thought I would find it elsewhere... :)

Which is why you are prohibited from entering your own monestery.

People that can find nothing worth fighting for also have trouble finding things to live for.

Why, Hello Dalai !!  Seems no matter where he is, the press seems to find some fallen-away Catholic to interview.

He's so right... we really do need to update the technology of our weapon stockpiles. Thanks, Mr. Lama for the tip.

What do you mean by "fallen away" Catholic? I thought he had always been a Buddhist.

Until the Dalai Lama can convince the rest of the world that war is "outdated" and recommend its replacement or make his proclimations from Tibet, he is simply saying what should be, divorced from reality.

The Dalai Lama told 36,000 people at Rutgers Stadium that the concept of war was outdated and young people have a responsibility to make this century one of peace.

As much as I might wish it were outdated, I predict that war will continue to be a growth industry for years to come.

"His quiet mind is the kind of serenity New Jersey, home of strip malls, could use," Arielle Gomberg said.

Are strip malls incompatible with serenity?
