LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - The city of Las Cruces' official emblem has three crosses that a federal lawsuit alleges are unconstitutional religious symbols on public property.

The lawsuit, filed Sept. 16 in U.S. District Court in Albuquerque, seeks the removal of the crosses.

"The crosses serve no governmental purpose other than to disenfranchise and discredit non-Christian citizens," said the lawsuit filed by Paul F. Weinbaum, who lives in the Las Cruces area, and Martin J. Boyd of Las Cruces.

Defendants include city officials, city councilors, Mayor Bill Mattiace, District Attorney Susana Martinez, state Attorney General Patricia Madrid and Gov. Bill Richardson.

"We have had to defend ourselves before and we're ready to do it again," Mattiace said.

Wow, I just moved to Las Cruces (grew up near there) . . .

Do the crosses appear on logos painted onto emergency response vehicles, like police cars, fire trucks, ambulances?

If so, do you suppose Weinbaum and Boyd would object when one is dispatched to their homes to save lives or property?

Is using the vehicles with the offending logos an expression of religious preference by the city?  Does it discriminate against their ability to dial 9-1-1?

Yes, they (the crosses) are on a lot of municipal property. I am sure that they are offended that the symbol is anywhere on city property, that is their whole case, they are trying to bring up the whole seperation of church and state by mis-reading the first ammendment. By the way, there are many places in NM that have crosses in public places, including a mountian where there was a battle between Mexican settlers of Tularosa and Mescelaro Apachee tribesmen, visible from the highway. I wonder when someone will be screaming to have that taken down.

Next thing you know, the ACLU will petition that the name "Christopher Columbus" be eliminated from public-school textbooks on Establishnment Clause grounds, since his name in Italian, Cristoforo Colombo, means "Christ-bearing colonizer."

I'm still surprised that nobody has sued to change the name of Corpus Christi.

Las Cruces means 'the Crosses' in Spanish - you are exactly right. Maybe while they're at it they ought to change the name to Bogusville. OTOH,would changing the name be an act of disrespect to their Mexican heritage? Hhhmmm...

They better change the town's name as well. Come to think of it a lot of towns will have to change their name's. You never know how insidious the plot to make America a Theocracy truly is till you look at a map. San Fransico,
Saint Paul, Los Angeles, San Antonio, just to name a few.
It will take time but the effort will be well spent.

"I'm still surprised that nobody has sued to change the name of Corpus Christi."

Those idiots at the ACLU probably think that it was named after Fahrenheit 451 actress Julie Christie (who had quite a corpus in her young age).

"Filipinos in Washington State and Hawaii unfortunately lean towards the Democratic Party (not sure about other states), largely due to economic issues."

If I'm not mistaken, Bush did fairly well with Filipino voters in Hawaii in 2004. It may have had something to do with the War on Terror---remember that the Philippines are in the front line, with Muslim terrorist revolutionaries trying to topple a society that is 83% Roman Catholic and at least 92% Christian.

The city of Las Cruces' official emblem has three crosses

Won't they have to petition next to change the name of Las Cruces, lest just one more poor atheist be forced to hear the word 'crosses'?

Hurry, aclu, erase all vestiges of our Judeo-Christian culture and heritage so as not to 'offend' the few. The trials of rapists and molesters and murderers and resources and court time to punish them can be pushed asided to make room for this 'real' crisis. *eyeroll*

Of course, replacing the offending emblems with three crescents will be perfectly OK.

OK? No, not merely ok, but a grand gesture of tolerance and understanding especially as Ramadan approaches.

Perhaps the town (internal struggle, I can't say it) should be renamed Las Crescent? /sarcasm, I must go barf now...

They can rename the city Las Medialunas (the crescents) to show their good will towards any Islamofascists who might pass through after sneaking across the border, while keeping a Spanish name. And the loonies in the media should be happy too.

LOL, I got my 'translation' from babelfish.

The media-loonies will love it! (lol, so much like 'medialunas'). And think of how far it will go toward Muslims efforts to 'convert' Mexicans and others south of the border.
