The No. 2 al Qaeda leader in Iraq was killed Sunday night, U.S. officials say. Abu Azzam, reportedly the deputy to Abu Musab al Zarqawi, was shot during a house rain in Baghdad, according to Pentagon officials.

As the aide to Zarqawi, Azzam was reportedly in control of financing foreign fighters coming into Iraq, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports.

According to Pentagon officials coalition troops raided the house in response to a tip. When Azzam opened fire, these officials say, he was killed with troops' return fire.

I never saw anyone with so many aides......

Top aide.

Zarqawi, "Hassan, now you are my top aide". Hassan, "I quit".

That happened in Israel. They got so good at popping the terrorist leadership, that they had to be anonymous. Never fear, the more top aides that get popped, the worse it is for him. I don't care how many it takes. Let him name goats as his assistants.

Or so many dead aides. I'll bet that very few people live to their 90 day evals.

Some of us remember that some GI might have put his life on the line to take this guy out. Not really a laughing matter.

Good news is welcome but this is deja-vu all over again. Now when the constitution is voted on, and Saddam is tried and executed, that will be welcome without sarcasm.

People who tired of the Cold War were ready to give up with the Berlin Airlift, the Soviet invasion of Hungary and Afghanistan. They betrayed the American soldier in Viet Nam. They welcomed Mao as an agrarian reformer. They cheered for Che, and Fidel, and Yassir, and Tito. They turned a blind eye to the Communist degradations. And... it is happening all over again, this time with America facingt a new enemy. The same red-diaper babies walking around today were the types who fought the draft in WWI, joined the Progressives and Henry Wallace; joined the bogus peace movements and followed the cowardly Christian fakirs and craven black leadership. Look, there really isn't much difference between Jane Fonda and Cindy Sheehan. And, rest assured, a new Cindy Sheehan is now being molded at some University near you.

So many #2 Al Qaeda honcho aides at that. I mean whats the recruitment slogan.

How's about this for a recruiting slogan:

I don't give a sh*t, but I'm happy to give my #2.

It used to be that these guys were all named Mohammed. Now they're all Abu. Who's next? Ahkmed? Amir?

Its really not funny - I think its more frustration with Freepers. Probably because even if our soldiers capture a top aide there will be another one to take his place. Believe me it sometimes helps to joke to relieve the pent up frustrations with these terrorists.

Thank you areafiftyone.

I am as proud of our soldiers as anyone. I make sure at airports and elsewhere I address every military dressed person I see with a big thank you. And will go out of my way do so.

I mourn for our fallen heroes.

I respect our nation and President and understand that we are destroying our enemies bit by bit.

I guess I would just like to see a headline or article where we killed some #1s.

Exactly. There are so many of those terrorists and always one to take the other one's place. They are like cockroachs.

Geeze, I misunderstood Shepard Smith! He did a little blurp on Brit Humme's Special Report earlier and I thought he said that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi had been killed yesterday and I've been dumb founded ever since that no other news outlet was mentioning it!

So sad to read here that it was one of his zillionth lieutenants. No wonder we're still getting damned hurricane news 24/7. I was really hoping for something spectacular like Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's or Osama's deaths to over-ride the hurricanes.... *Sigh*

It seems to me that being a Zarqawi aide is like being the guy in the red shirt on Star Trek.
