Congress Urged to Recognize the Beginning of Ramadan By Susan Jones CNSNews.com Senior Editor September 26, 2005
(CNSNews.com) - An Islamic advocacy group is urging American Muslims "and other people of conscience" to contact their elected representatives and urge them to sign a House resolution recognizing the upcoming fast of Ramadan -- and commending Muslims for their faith.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations calls the resolution an important tool for encouraging dialogue between Muslims and their elected officials, as well as enhancing understanding of the Islamic faith.
The resolution, which expresses the opinion of Congress, mentions threats and attacks directed at members of the Islamic faith since the 9/11 terror attacks.
It then resolves that:
"(1) during this time of conflict, in order to demonstrate solidarity with and support for members of the community of Islam in the United States and throughout the world, the House of Representatives recognizes the Islamic faith as one of the great religions of the world; and
"(2) in observance of and out of respect for the commencement of Ramadan...the House of Representatives acknowledges the onset of Ramadan and expresses its deepest respect to Muslims in the United States and throughout the world on this significant occasion."
Ramadan is expected to begin on October 4 or 5 this year, depending on the sighting of the new moon. It is the month in which Muslims abstain from food, drink and other sensual pleasures from dawn to sunset for the sake of spiritual renewal.
CAIR said it is asking mosques and Islamic centers nationwide to host a "Sharing Ramadan" Iftar, or fast-breaking meal, to enhance understanding of Islam and to encourage Americans of all faiths meet their Muslims neighbors.
coinsidence=coincidence! Before the spelling police get here!
Not just no, but HELL no.
Muck the Fuslims.
Hah! That's only for Christians! When Ramadan is over Bush will probably have a dinner for them again. Unless we call our Congresscritters and let them know we are bitterly opposed to it, they will pass it. Bush will get it pushed through.
If President Bush can have a Ramadan Dinner at The White House in the Fall of 2001 I see no reason why Congress should not recognize the event.
bush has had a least One Ramadan Dinner at the White House and that was while Ground Zero was still smoldering.
How about the fact that Islam is a disease that MUST be wiped off the planet? How about the fact that Islam's nearest cousin is Nazism.
Islam must be disassembled and destroyed. All of it. "Moderate" or otherwise.
How about the Fact that Neville Chamberlain Believed in Coexistance with the Nazi Party of Germany and signed the Peace In Our Time treaty with them?
Soon as they recognize the beginning of Lent.
Screw Ramadan !!!!!!
While Both President Bush and Neville Chamberlain are/were members of their nation's Conservative Parties, I would never equivocate the two leaders.
Just because some people cannot accept the concept that islam does not allow a greater allegiance to anything else, does not mean that the concept is not real.
True muslims are a rot on the republic.
I recognize ramadan.
As a time of increased vigilance!
Deportation Day sounds like a great idea for a national holiday.
You are free to stick your head in the sand. I, on the other hand, prefer to confront reality, and observe that both leaders are trying to sugar-coat violent and horrific power structures, and ignore grave threats to the safety of their respective nations.
Okay, so you are madder more about Bush being Chamberlain than this act. I get it now. I'm not in disagreement.
This idea is insane. Muslims are latter day Nazis, closet or in your face and strapping on bombs. Anyone in congress voting for that should be drummed out of office.
I don't think it can happen. We don't have the proper facilities.
To properly recognize Ramadamadingdong, everyone would need to sit on a toilet at the same time and all flush together.
We just don't have enough toilets!
...I think a little resolution-fixing is in order. Just imagine if this were 1942 and......
A most excellent observation!!!
