China sets new rules on Internet news Sun Sep 25, 8:03 AM ET
China set new regulations on Internet news content on Sunday, widening a campaign of controls it has imposed on other Web sites, such as discussion groups.
"The state bans the spreading of any news with content that is against national security and public interest," the official Xinhua news agency said in announcing the new rules, which took effect immediately.
The news agency did not detail the rules, but said Internet news sites must "be directed toward serving the people and socialism and insist on correct guidance of public opinion for maintaining national and public interests."
Established news media needed permission to run a news Web site, it said. New operators had to register themselves with government information offices.
I get on here, Drudge, WorldNetDaily, Newsmax, whatever, so, it seems that normal news sites are ok.

I got on FR from Suzhou a few years back.
Race, could you tell me how you're getting access over there? I'm looking at two weeks next year when we get our little girl, and I'm wondering how to stay in touch without running afoul of the governement.
I have a laptop and a internet capable phone (that I'm writing to you on, now) and I'm wondering what will work best, or as back-up, for me.
Do they look at what's on your computer when you enter the country?

Hey, thats what Hitlery said she thought was needed here!
Hmmmm, why, I think I see a pattern!
I am hooked up to the LAN in the hotel.
Check and ask what your planned hotel has, there IS dialup! LOCAL dialup!
I use the LAN, Webshots doesnt seem to work all the time, it keeps timing out, but FR works like a charm!
Is it possible there is a "guest internet", to make China look more open than it really is? Hotels and other areas open to foreign access could have one level of limits, while the general public are more restricted.
I don't know how much control a country can have over its servers, but that was the first thing that came to mind, kind of like the "model cities" that NK shows visitors so they don't see the hovels and the pathetic poverty in the rest of the country.
TU!
I was kinda worried about coming home to a 500 dollar phone bill if I had to rely on GPRS, assuming it's even available there.
Did they check your software and documents when you entered?
No, that surprised me, I wasnt checked for anything at all!
Good, because I did not know where Neijing was. What are you doing there?
And you can get on FreeRepublic :-)
My sister was a buyer for a company she worked for. She took a tour of one of those model "factories" in China. The "employees" read scripted comments about how the were noncontributing people who were harmfull to society untill the state "educated" them and taught them the error of their ways.
I was quite proud when my sis quit her job and found a company that has some morals. Now she works for some company out of Australia.
Don't blame the keyboard for your posted mistakes. Preview is your friend. Use it!
So there is a glitch in the Great Firewall of China?
I wonder. I just got back from Shanghai yesterday -- I didn't experience lack of access to any sites either from the hotel or office.
Apparently the PRC has learned from our mistakes.
