It is a screenplay adaptation of Robert Penn Warren's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, which was a roman à clef based on the life of Southern politician Huey Long. Sean Penn plays backwoods politician Willie Stark a "man of the people" who railed against corruption but becomes a power-thirsty governor. Stark loses his soul and, like Huey Long, he's destined for tragedy. Jude Law plays Chronicle reporter Jack Burden, who becomes his right-hand man.
