Diane Ibbotson came to the District amid yesterday's anti-war protest to support U.S. efforts in Iraq and say her enlisted son died for a worthy cause.
"I know the loss. I know the grief," Mrs. Ibbotson said.
Her son, Army Cpl. Forest Jostes, 21, was killed in Iraq alongside the son of Cindy Sheehan, the California woman whom the media has made a recognizable face of the anti-war movement.
"But," Mrs. Ibbotson said, "a mother's grief, as deep as it goes, does not justify undermining the morale of the United States armed forces while we are at war."
Mrs. Ibbotson and her husband, Von, of Albion, Ill., gathered at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Northwest with nearly 50 other family members of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan as part of a counterprotest to the weekend's anti-war and anti-President Bush activities.
Many who showed up to support Mr. Bush and U.S. troops, and to question the war protesters, fought back tears while clutching pictures of friends and family members killed in battle.
"The loss we feel is with us every moment we are awake," said Mike Broomhead of Phoenix, Ariz., whose brother, Tom, was killed in Fallujah on Memorial Day 2003. "The fact that you can march down the streets of our nation's capital and not wear a flak jacket, you owe that to the men and women in uniform."

Oh Lord, grant these families peace and lend your strength
to them. Amen.
Amen and God bless this woman for her willingness, despite the grief, to come out and say what must be said.
Mrs. Ibbotson said, "a mother's grief, as deep as it goes, does not justify undermining the morale of the United States armed forces while we are at war."
Mrs. Ibbotson has more courage and dignity than a thousand Sheehans. My heart breaks for the families of loved ones lost in battle in Iraq, and I thank God for giving them the strength to go on and speak of the courage, honor, and dedication of their loved ones and the purpose of their mission.
God save us all from such...and God bless the faithful, dignified, sufferers who have lost loved ones in a noble and just cause. What we are doing in Iraq against our enemies and for the Iraqis is just that, as my own friends on the ground there, fighting and rebuilding atest. Their testimnony and words trump all that the MSM or the likes of the seditious Ali-Sheehans could ever utter.
thank you"Kaslin"
Someday, Sheehan is going to wake up and look in the mirror and say, My God, what have I done? The celebrities will have moved on to a new cause du jour. Her family will have left her behind. And she will be alone with not only her grief but the shame of what she did to her son's memory. Only then will she understand what these other noble families have done. For now, I pray for God's healing hand on them all.
What a beautiful quote and sentiment.
During her grief she maintained her dignity, and honored her son and his sacrifice for this Country.
