Man Charged With Animal Cruelty After Tossing Kitten To Pit Bull
Nicholasville, KY (AP) -- A man was charged with first-degree cruelty to animals after allowing his pit bull to maul a kitten to death, police said.
Roger Alan Fairchild, 24, of Nicholasville is accused of taking the kitten named Midnight on Sept. 1 and pitching it to his pit bull named Damien, police said. Fairchild was charged shortly after he threatened to order the dog to attack two officers, police said.
The kitten belonged to Shanelle Crowe, 12, who lives in an apartment complex behind Fairchild's home.
Shanelle did not witness the incident, but apparently other youngsters did, police said.
The kitten often wandered up and down a sidewalk in front of the apartment complex. On the night of Sept. 1, several youngsters were petting the kitten when Fairchild walked up and grabbed it, said Nicholasville police Lt. John Branscum.
"A 12-year-old who had the cat in her lap asked 'What are you doing?' and he said, 'I'm feeding my dog,"' Branscum said. Fairchild then took the kitten inside his home. One girl followed in an attempt to retrieve the kitten and saw Fairchild throw it to the dog.
Fairchild initially was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, terroristic threatening and menacing, all misdemeanors, and lodged in the Jessamine County jail.
He wasn't charged with the felony animal-cruelty charge until this week, Branscum said, because it took several days to get a warrant signed.
Shanelle Crowe's father, Tom Crowe, said his daughter and 17-year-old stepdaughter "were pretty bad for a while" but have since acquired a kitten named Blackie.
Looks just like my kitten :( This is sad. The guy who trew the kitten at the dog needs to be shot.
That ia already being debated , as it should be. Just because rational standards are difficult to come by does not mean the subject should be ignored.
Pigs according to many tests are smarter and more aware than dogs. That does not mean we should not consume them as meat (although I cannot bring myself to do that anymore) but does mean they should be raised, treated and killed in a humane fashion. "Humane" - that is a good word - it implies basic values of decency and respect for all life. At least it does to me.
Off topic, but I want to say that IMO PETA is the worst enemy animals have. I think they have accomplished very little positive and have created a great deal of mistrust in the public mind of anyone who takes a pro humane treatment of animal stance. I think that respect for all life is a natural inclination of religious people - all religions - and most of those are conservatives, but in-your-face organizations like PETA and even terms like 'animal rights' turn off those people before then can even camly consider the topic.
I agree that he needs to be shot. And I fear that I might do the shooting if I witnessed something like that. I doubt that it would be judged "justifiable homicide" in Arizona.
For some reason we seem to hear about lots of animal cruelty cases in this state. I don't know if the rest of you hear the same number of them where you are. Dogs shot with arrows, doused with gasoline and burned, fitted with barbed-wire collars, kittens duct taped to the freeway, cats dragged behind cars with ropes - the list goes on and on. Is the Phoenix area a hotbed of animal cruelty or is that normal all over the country?
The reason pet-killing is such a concern for law enforcement is that people who torture and kill house pets for fun usually graduate to humans later on in life. Jeffrey Dahmer is one famous example. Search for "vampire of sacramento" to find another one.
Snakes only eat live food. You can't give it "snake chow".
You have hit on something. One of the warning symptoms of psychopathic killers is wanton cruelty to animals as a child.
This person is 24, but you have to wonder if he has a history of such behavior.
It is also possible that it is manifesting itself later in life than usual.
The guy needs serious psychological evaluation as a protection to society.
Jeeze that is just sad. Words escape me.
I used to have Red-tail Boas they used to eat rabbits! Whats worse, killing the rabbits or starving the snake??
In my own opinion probably 75% of the owners of pit bulls are as dangerous as their dogs. They live their own sick sadistic cowardly lives by having a mean dog. If you are among the 25% who just likes the breed, find another breed, One day this one will be outlawed. Hopefully.
You know, I never thought about it that way. You're absolutely right, however. Respect for life in all its manifestations reflects a highly spiritual (hesitate to say religious) view of the world; PETA and other "animal rights activists" rarely come off as such.
Personally, I do enjoy eating meat, and my leather jacket and shoes keep me warm and dry. I also have two kitties that I adore, and when I go to my dad's, there is always room on my lap for one more animal to rest it's head.
I am fiercely against cruelty to animals, ESPECIALLY in cases such as this. Lastly, I am even against certain kinds of animal testing.
But - NEVER will I affiliate myself with PETA or label myself an "animal rights activist". They do NOTHING to push for legislature that would keep this *ucker from ever seeing the light of day from beyond a jail cell.
Hypothetically, if some guy wanted to feed his cats to his pit bulls (provided he did it in a non-cruel way, meaning killing the cats first) to feed them, that would be disturbing but probably not criminal. But for the guy to take a kitten belonging to a 12 year old girl and throw it to his dog (and then threaten the cops with the dog) clearly shows him to be a psychopath. In my opinion, animal cruelty charges alone aren't enough. It would be animal cruelty if he did it to his own kittens, but the penalty should be much harsher since he did it to someone else's.

I'm glad I helped you see this in another light. I agree with everything you say including using the broader word 'spiritual' over 'religious'. I unabashedly use the word religious because so many Freepers identify themselves as such and I want to remind them that all life comes from the Creator and should be respected. 'Respect' does not seem to be in PETA's lexicon.
annyokie, is that you?
Send him to me the human pitbull and I'll show him what mauling is all about. There was post on this board earlier about a guy who tortured and killed a dog who later got killed himself by getting run over by a large tractor riding mower. May a similar fate befall this cretin.
>Whats the difference in a kitten and a dog ,and a mouse and a pet snake?<
Think of it like this (and don't forget, this asshat used somebody else's kitten), a dog is perfectly capable of eating, and thriving, on dog food.
A snake, on the other hand, requires live food, or sometimes can be conditioned to eat pre-killed, frozen mice.
This pervert did not need to feed the dog a live kitten. He's a sadistic animal, and needs to be locked away from the rest of humanity.
Your arguments are void of the element of emotion and the value people will place on a living thing, such as a personal (that term is important) pet. For example, if you reduce a human being to a blob of meat, one with a simple function or utility, you will be thinking like Saddam Hussein. With few exceptions, there is no human attachment to a cow, a rat, a starling or a worm. But all of those can be property. Why treat a kitten as just property when its value is different?
The focus of this thread was not just the killing of an animal, it was the emotions that the killing unleashed, the sadness and torment it produced. People die every day, but we hurt most for those who are near to us. Cats and kittens die every day, but to murder one in a manner that is calloused and hurts children is an issue that cannot be overlooked BY A THOUGHTFUL PERSON.
A kitten is a perfectly innocent animal. Children love a kitten or a puppy. If you want to hurt a child, hurting their pet is a good way to get the job done.
Your PETA argument is risible. Cruelty to animals isn't just the killing of an animal, it's how its done. As far as this argument goes, put me in PETCH - People for the ethical treatment of children.
Put the dog up, dont feed it for a week or two, then put this bastard in the pen with it, handcuffed, and bacon grease poured over him.
That's why inbreeding should be discouraged.
I'll bet if we toss this a-hole to his own pit bulls, they'll maul him to death, too.
